I would argue (if I dared dissent from Douglass where he could hear me) that the Fourth of July is a reminder that even though you are currently being forcibly oppressed, you can still declare your intent to fight for your rights and hope that the fight will be successful in the end. The Fourth wasn’t the day its signers gained independence. The Fourth was when they declared independence. And we don’t celebrate the day we gained independence, because there is no such day - it was gained a little at a time, inch by inch, over years of work and setbacks and losses. Those signatories weren’t close to free for another five years, and were still in real danger of being recaptured for almost forty.

3 days after the earthquakes, the Venezuelan regime is stopping aid from civilians who have come together in different collecting centers all over the country to help those that are being rescued and still remain under rubble. police and other “government” security forces are interfering trying to take down those collecting centers because some are from the opposition (they want to politicize aid), they put different check points to stop people and confiscate all aid (this is wasting crucial time. they want people to die and take credit for all the aid civilians are collecting). government officials are not letting foreign rescue teams get to the ground quickly, instead they’re creating propaganda content posing for photos and videos with them, all this while people are still dying under the rubble. they want to have people register to help otherwise they won’t have permission to do anything.

It also really speaks to the notion that “a failed romance is the greatest tragedy of all,” which ignores all of the suffering you mentioned in your post. I think this is extra poignant because it is not Fernand that ends Dantés revenge era; it is the death of Villefort’s son.

the fucking irony though? if we be a bit more normal about this tag and extend some compassion to the person who made it, we may consider that they had a “yes and” thought process when making the tag, such as:

because every single time me or someone else tries to talk about the fact that there is not enough compassion for people who aren't cishet white and rich and from the global north it gets "and what about animals" "but what about animals" "animals too" . it's endlessly frustrating because as a latin american there are hundreds and hundreds of people out there who would rather see my people shot and dead but are like "oh but what about the poor animals :( what about animals :(" . why when i say no one has any compassion for those in the global south does everyone jump to "wow animals too!" what about this conversation requires animals to be brought into it
