“You looked sunburnt,” Nico recalls. “When I picked you up from the bridge, you were all red. I thought children of Apollo can’t get sunburnt?”

“We can’t,” Will says, and there’s a kind of sad smile on his face. “It’s one of the perks of being a child of Apollo.”

That makes no sense.

Until it suddenly does.

“Your healing powers eat at your body,” Nico says slowly. “It’s like me and my powers. They eat at you until there’s nothing left. And because you’d been so busy healing everyone, and then the burial rites, you were literally burning up.”

“Yeah,” Will says quietly. He’s wearing a short-sleeved flannel shirt over the camp shirt, has been since the day of the battle, half sleeves reaching down to his elbows. Nico hasn’t noticed the detail until now, but the high flush on Will’s face…

…is a sunburn, not the adrenaline-induced flush that Nico had thought it was.

Will looks like he debates with himself for a moment, but then he pulls up one of the sleeves to reveal a large white bandaid (Nico hadn’t even known they make bandaids this big). “There’s a large burn under there,” he explains. “I overdid it trying to save a couple lives.”

Nico feels almost sick. Will had been healing him at the day of Gaea’s awakening, and he’d just accepted it (not that Will’s iron-solid grip had given really given him an alternative). Shouldn’t he have known better?

He’s just about ready to start beating himself up over it when Will places a hand on his, on top of the blankets. “Hey, Nico, don’t worry. I didn’t overdo it as much as last time. Trust me, I learnt my lesson when I almost combusted last year. I’m not doing that again, do you know how much it sucked?”

“Well,” Nico says, thoroughly miffed that Will had interrupted his self-flagellation. “I can’t imagine it’s any more pleasant than literally dissolving into the shadows around you.”

Nico works with cleaning up the bodies mostly and he constantly gets harassed by the ghosts because he’s making the corpses too ugly, or using the wrong color or CHRIST KID LEARN HOW TO USE A DAMN KNIFE MESS MY FACE UP AND I’LL HAUNT YOU FOR ALL OF ETERNITY 

Bianca works the front end and the coffin show room. Talking with families, listening to the dead loved one shit talk them: “I never liked my son-in-law.” “Tell them I want the one with hydraulics” “IF YOU LET THEM PICK THAT ONE OUT–” “My grandson is your age and single, dear.” “I TOLD MY DAUGHTER NOT TO MARRY HIM. “ “Girl, if you put them on that mailing list I will make SURE you never hear the end of me.”
