being into revolutionary girl utena is crazy bc you’ll look at a screencap and be like ‘omg… shiori (cut out by juri but yk) is crossing her LEFT hand over her RIGHT hand rather than her RIGHT hand over her LEFT hand like every other girl in the scene, symbolizing her non conforming to society and that she is a lesbian. also the men aren’t crossing their hands which symbolizes they are expected to be like masculine and strong or whatever (also symbolized by their blocky, rectangular uniforms vs the girls’ sailor suits with skirts that have more soft angles) instead of demure and obedient (obedience implied by the hand gesture the girls do). so by still crossing her hands shiori symbolizes that she is still giving in to heteronormativity and patriarchy (as she does by looking at the brown hair guy who i think is right next to her? idk) BUT by doing it in a way different from every other girl there she is also being subtly a lesbian. i wonder if juri is crossing her hands like that too’

thinking about kanae being distanced from the other female students even though she’s no different from them. she doesn’t wear the uniform even though she attends school. she doesn’t go to class, she doesn’t have a dorm, she wears makeup…she’s made to seem more ‘grown-up’ despite barely being an adult. she’s adultified so that her status as a child bride isn’t questioned. it’s fine that utena finds her and the headmaster in a sexual position because she isn’t a student, she isn’t a child, she isn’t allowed to be. she’s expected to act with the emotional, sexual, and mental maturity of an adult, but isn’t afforded any of the power that comes with adulthood (ex. her mother having such control over her, her father deciding who she’ll marry, she doesn’t even get to eat the poison apple herself).
