“strong,” he replied without hesitation. his stance subconsciously mimicked the girl in front of him, palms resting on the bar top. they had been doing this back and forth nearly every saturday night for months. if he had a closing shift at fv, nine times out of ten he stopped in at yardhouse before making the drive back to pacific beach. nora was a damn good bartender, he couldn’t help having a soft spot for her. at her line of questions, jase simply shrugged, leaning back slightly in his stool. “new job’s alright,” he said, eyebrows raised just slightly. a faint stress line was no doubt etched in the space between his brows. “two jobs is just kicking my ass. also my new coworker used to bang my girlfriend, apparently, so that’s casual.” he continued nonchalantly, as casual as if he was commenting on the weather. his gaze shifted to a spot on the wall just to the right of the bartender’s face, not really wanting to see her reaction to that particular piece of information. an easy smile found its’ way back to his face as he attempted to shift the conversation. “what about you, nora? still the best bartender in san diego?”
nodding, nora began to survey the bottles in the well below the bar top, mentally trying to put things together that would be strong in alcohol content as well as taste somewhat good. she listened to jase, fully aware of each word that fell from his lips while grabbing a silver shaker tin and pouring in a few liquors. though she hadn’t been bartending for very long, the girl knew her way around a bar and what pleased each of her regulars. jase’s taste was unique and it was no surprise that she enjoyed his company, their conversations being the cherry on top of multiple shitty saturdays at yardhouse. “wait, what?” her eyes popped up to meet his as she began to shake the tin, fully meshing the liquids inside into one. “this was just casual conversation? like hey, nice working with you bro, i’ve been inbetween your girl’s legs before?” nora couldn’t help but let her mouth fall open, the risque nature of the situation tickling the spot inside her belly that yearned for drama. it was a trait she hid somewhat well and she couldn’t help the thirst she had for it. “oh yeah, just the best in all the land,” chuckling, she strained his cocktail over ice and into a glass in which she pushed across the bar toward him. “have a whirl at that. it may taste like shit... but you have to promise me that you’ll drink it anyways.” a coy smile spread across her face as she watched jase put the glass to his lips for a sip of her mystery concoction.
