The round of 16 had 8 total games, the USMNT might have only had 16.5m views but the round in aggregate probably had a ton more than that. Each team splits the money. So the USMNT benefits from the popularity of all the other teams in that round. I don’t know for sure, but I’d go out on a limb and say that there were probably Round of 16 games for the Men’s WC that had more viewers than the Women’s Final. Bet the house on that. 

The US teams ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES GETTING PAID. And they are not ONLY being paid by US television stations. 

How much merchandise was sold during the USWNT World Cup run? I bet you it’s not even close to what was sold for the Men’s team. That’s not even counting all the WC logo’d junk people probably bought.
