Wang Ruolin (Zhao Jing) speaks about the scene that was deleted in a live stream. I translated a snippet of it below:
Wang Ruolin: That scene was a key turning point, it was a scene I looked highly of, I really liked. It took five hours to film. The reason was we were waiting for a chair. The chair I was sitting on originally was a little crude, the director insisted that we must change into the chair I was sitting now, it’s much more luxurious and they needed my arm on the armrest. Firstly because it needed to demonstrate that Xie’er is still very caring towards me. Also, it showed that when I was so angry, I was still able to shake. In the end I still shed a crystal tear, that was because I “accepted it”, then my head swayed to Xie’er, that was improvised on my side. At that time, I sat on the chair for four hours and never left the seat…because I wanted to stay in the zone, I felt like my butt wasn’t even mine, but I just wanted to find the right feel for the scene. The director told me the feel is “(you’ve) accepted it”, he didn’t say what I accepted, it was up to me to decide what Zhao Jing “accepted”, as soon as he said it, I cried, I cried off camera immediately…I think it is also up to the viewers to interpret what he “accepted”.
At the end I added a movement where my head is buried in his arms, no, no, no, just buried in his shoulders, that scene could have been filmed better, it wasn’t very obvious. In that scene my expressions were extremely gratified.
About the avalanche scene, Zhao Jing has had a tough life, he has such a good son Xie’er. That scene was the last scene, the scene that was deleted, it was the last time we looked at each other. Regrets aside, it was regretful for sure, but I understand why it might have been cut due to pacing or other factors. I really valued this scene, but from an overall perspective, it may not be important.
Host: But everyone was really looking forward to this.
WRL: Everyone looked forward to this scene because they love this character. The director said I should be angry in the final scene, however I refused to, Zhao Jing have “accepted” it, he just wants Xie’er to get out and continue his business. I, as your Yifu, your emotional support, the final gaze is very important. He comes in and asked “Yifu are you cold?” and he puts the covers on Yifu, obviously I cannot speak, I looked at him, smiled and nodded my head slightly. Slowly I lifted my head and kept on looking at him, my eyes were fully immersed, he looked at me too, we exchanged eye contact for 4/5 seconds. I want the audience to know that, after the gaze, we will never see each other again, the audience will not know until after, but I want them to know that I predicted our end and that gaze was very important. It was his final farewell to Xie’er, Xie’er may not understand what I meant then, I want him to know I will always have his back, just go ahead, don’t worry about me.

Give yourself permission to write fast, write messy or ugly, and edit your draft into beauty later.
