“You were carrying a terrible burden by yourself, weren’t you”

he’s 22 and away at college when natsume first moves in, but even before they meet, natsume feels like he already knows the man, because his presence is everywhere

natsume’s room was the one his new brother, Yuuta, grew up in. and although Yuuta took most of his things with him when he moved into his dorm, there are traces of him left scattered around. pictures of him and his friends tacked up on the walls, some extra clothes folded neatly in the closet, books he hadn’t had room for in his dorm still stacked neatly on the bookshelf

the fujiwaras apologize for the clutter, tell him that they can help pack away yuuta’s things and store them in the attic, but natsume says it’s okay. there’s something nice, about getting to see these traces of the man that had slept in this room before him

the fujiwaras are always talking about yuuta, fond smiles on their faces and worried wonderings about whether he’s taking proper care of himself so far away from home.

when natsume asks for a bike, the fujiwaras lend him yuuta’s old one

(’just until we can buy you your own,’ says shigeru, despite natsume’s assurances that it’s perfectly fine)

it’s a shiny red, with an odd assortment of stickers plastered all over the frame, and obviously well cared for.

when natsume starts school, his teachers smile in exasperation when they find out who he’s staying with, and ask how his troublemaker of a brother is doing. 

everyone seems to have something to say to him about his brother, and when Nishimura asks him one day if it bothers him, natsume truthfully tells him that it doesn’t. it makes him feel like he belongs

and then, a few months after natsume moves in with the fujiwaras, yuuta comes home to visit over summer break

natsume is nervous to meet him, wondering if yuuta will resent him, if he’ll want his bedroom back

but when the man steps into the house that first night, his eyes immediately seek out natsume’s, and that familiar grin spreads across his face, real this time and not just beaming out of a photo.

yuuta steps forward and sweeps natsume into a crushing hug, gushing about how happy he is to finally meet him, after how much their parents talked about him.

natsume is startled, that as much as the fujiwaras had been talking to him about yuuta, they’d been regaling yuuta with stories of how natsume had been settling into his new home as well.

yuuta sleeps in the guest room during his stay, despite natsume offering up his own room.

just two days into his stay, he finds out about natsume’s ability to see youkai, and before the night is over, yuuta and nyanko-sensei are thick as thieves.

yuuta falls naturally into the doting, overprotective brother role, and over the course of the two weeks he’s home, the two of them become inseparable.
