i think some of the arguments that arise in the time that nicky takes care of the twins while they’re in high school stem from the fact that nicky probably didn’t have a phase of finding his parents insufferable like the twins are kind of going through. because some of the annoyance that the twins feel towards nicky likely can be traced back to the fact that he cares too much about them. but when nicky was their age, he would have done anything to get his parents to like him again. he changed for them, went to camp and church and tried to be their perfect christian son for them. even up to the events of the raven king, he wanted them to like him. so when the twins act out and roll their eyes at him and walk to school even when he wants to drop them off, nicky can’t relate to that feeling at all; he can only see it as rejection

I hate and love my parents and that hurts. You are the people who will sacrifice everything you have to provide me with a good future and yet you are the only ones who broke me in an irreparable way.
