Assessment Progress
Throughout the past week I have continued to work on the short films, utilising post-production techniques such as super 8 imposition and colour grading to help to aid in the narrative quality of the film. I have -re-edited the shots a number of times now, and have created two films which seem to compliment each other and interact with the concept effectively. I am interested in showing the works on Friday.
I have also looked the David Lynch’s work on Transcendental Meditation, an artistic practice used a a generative means for envisioning ideas within the subconscious. I underwent the method myself, which involved laying down completely still for a significant amount of time. Similar to the Stanislavsky acting method, the aim was to release all tension within the body, creating a neutral state in which thoughts can flow. I managed to generate some ideas around the moon, as well as fog, but nothing as extensive as Lynch’s works. I incorporated these space images into the short films.
Below is an example of the type of imagery Lynch generates through his method:
^Footage from David Lynch’s Eraserhead (1977)
I also began colour grading the footage of the short films. The Blackmagic system which I used to record the work captures light differently from traditional digital cameras, meaning that colour can be altered to a higher degree. This helped me to blend-in footage of from NASA and David Lynch with the majority of my own work, creating a cryptic film which utilises different sources but still retains a singular artistic vision and colour palette.
8th September
Throughout the past week I have been particularly inspired by the work of Takashi Ito, whose video project “Ghosts” (1984) combines long exposure photography techniques with stop motion filmmaking to create a weird mix of both mediums. His aesthetic follows a similar trance quality to my last piece and predominantly uses night time photography, focusing on the movement of light within a city scape:
^Video Installation, Takashi Ito (1985)
I also learnt that NASA archival footage is public domain, and I have re-appropriated footage of space missions and subjected it to the same type of long exposure and time-lapse techniques which Ito had in his work:
^Edited original footage (2017)
Furthermore, I started to collect more footage for the film using the BlackMagic cameras in the resource centre. I started off in similar locations to my last film, trying to allude to the past work through a sense of familiarity, while still providing a different perspective of the same area.
Friday Sep 1 - Assessment 2
Today I worked on the class exercise, wherein we were to appropriate a work of great significance to us into another piece of artistic context or composition. Inspired by the work of David Lynch within his movie ‘Eraserhead”, I re-edited shots of the beginning of the film, adding colour to the originally black and white image, while splicing in footage of my own work into the film.
I wanted to capture the same dream-like of trance state which the director induces, exploring the type of film language I used for the initial assessment.
Furthermore, I wanted to extend on the film form, not simply relying on a voice over to provide a narrative to the sequence. I was advised by Claire to look at the work of Hiroshi Teshigahara, whose architecture videos strip film language to the basics of emotional music and visuals, creating a simplified narrative reliant on silent film techniques. I wish to extend these ideas within my own work.
I will continue to research artists provided in the resources of The Criterion Collection and Ubuweb.
I will post the link to the video once it has finished exporting.

Assessment 2 Research
Today I began to look at the work of David Lynch’s, opting to learn more about his photographs and music, rather than his films.
His photography is extremely ominous, using wide angle framing to capture an emotional essence within the landscape. he shoots very little portraits, but manages to capture specific type of emotion within all his shots. I will keep aspects of his in mind when creating my next piece:

My pamphlets hung up on various spaces.
August 16th
Yesterday I began work on the interactive part of my poster, which aims to provoke higher audience engagement and contextualise the final work as part of a greater installation.
Following the marketing tactics of cults and other communal groups that use posters, I created a number of pamphlets which advertise my work:
I printed these pamphlets on various posters walls around the UNSW campus. The idea is to invoke curiosity in the general public, and extend the viewership of my poster -- thus fulfilling the purpose of an advertisement poster: to raise awareness of a cause and provoke action.

8th August
Today I began work on creating a sound piece to accompany the visuals. Mirroring my idea of a commune poster wall, I decided to splice short snippets for existing media to represent a varied collage of posters. The soundclips originate from works of radical poetry, modern music, arthouse films which explore ideas of community, and other religious works. In order for the clip to have coherence I will continue to look for threads or similarities in subject matter.
7th August
Building on from the notion of community stated before, I developed the subject matter to explore aspects of cultism -- mainly what types of activities take place, and what draws people together to create a fanatical group. I was enamoured with the Scientology ‘personality test’ -- in that the only way to join the collective was to first gain an inward epiphany of your own self. I thought of incorporating a performance aspect, wherein I hand out pamphlets of personal information or a worksheet already filled out. The idea is to satire leaflet distributors on street corners, and adds to the aura of realism since they are found in close proximity to ‘posters’ existing within the real world.
4th August
I have chosen to complete the assignment under the theme of ‘collaboration and community’ as outlined within the course topics.
The idea stemmed from my initial research, wherein I searched for posters in existing contexts, and tried to incorporate found objects. I wanted to understand the purpose for a poster: to convey information and raise awareness towards esoteric subjects for the general public.
There is a specific wall on campus wherein students are encouraged to place up signages. It contained a mix of socialism posters, free piano lessons and other diverse topics. I found the idea of a collaborative collage interesting and wanted to extend the idea further:
To do this I had a look at the artists recommended to me during class (Alejandro Jodorowsky, Tarkovski) and thought I would incorporate a moving image/ projection aspect to the poster. I had a look at Brecht’s notions of psychoanalysis, wherein the audience is made aware of the filmic form to “highlight and provoke aspects of political debate”.
I went to an art store and began to experiment with a black gloss paper, similar to the emulsion they use for x-rays, to gain a better understanding about the materials I can project my film on.
