bio
One of the very first things that Nathan remembers are tears and the sound of someone wailing. As far as he can recall, his life was surrounded by pain and chaos, all unfortunate repercussions of his father's incident. Playing at the park led to the mothers dragging their children away from him, his sisters and his mother, trying to be nice to the neighbours or go trick-or-treating led to the doors being shut in his face. An absolute outcast at school, Nate barely had anyone willing to be around him, resorting to solitude and his own imagination. Things turned even worse when his powers manifested, so painfully similar to his father's. Whilst people avoided him, now that his powers came to light - quite literally at times - people avoided him like the plague.
Whilst it would have been easy to avoid confrontation with his own powers, Nate worked hard to control them. The last thing he wanted was to end up like his father - although he still didn't believe that the man did any of it on purpose - and he worked day and night, with plenty of failure and success, trying to control something that often could not be controlled. It only led to his further ostracisation from the society, and as Nate grew older, he turned to cars. Cars didn't judge him, it was easy to get lost driving down empty roads at night, so when he graduated from high school, it made sense that he opted to become a mechanic. It was difficult finding someone willing to hire him, but after long search, he finally managed it. He's been working at the same repair shop ever since, not really showing his face even to the customers, knowing that it was easier to hide and avoid confrontation.
That's been his way of living ever since he turned of age and moved out from his mother's home. Whilst he comes to visit ever so often, Nate is far more used to being by himself in the south of the island. Barely anyone questions him there, and whilst people still cross the streets as if he would somehow suddenly follow in his father's steps, Nate has grown used to ignoring it. Besides, it's easier to dig around for information in there; even after all those years, whilst his own emotions are painfully conflicted, Nate still tries to figure out why his father did what he did. There's only so much that his mother is willing to tell him, and the stories strangers tell about his father don't really help that much. Still, being as stubborn as he is, he searches for the answers, if not for himself then for his family, but it's far more difficult than he could have ever imagined.
It's not the perfect life that he gets to lead, but it's enough, and he knows that as long as his father will be considered a monster, this will be the best that he will ever have.

"What am I, a fuckin' asshole?" Nicky scoffs. "You don't go on secret missions alone. That's how you go missin' and your body shows up three days later." He presses his hands together into a gun, pointing it squarely at Nate before swinging it back at himself. "I need you to be the Robin--" The imaginary pistol bobs between them. "--to my Batman." In his head, every terrible idea improves dramatically if justified as a worthwhile endeavour. Or, in this case, a covert operation.
Adrenaline keeps him rocking onto the balls of his feet, already itching to move. "So? You comin' or what?" He jerks his head towards the corridor. "'Cause if not, we can stay up here and talk about what exactly your intentions are with my sister."
“You really think those bodies show up? I bet people here can make anyone disappear and no one will go looking for them.” Nate joked, although, there was the ever-present feeling that he was most likely right about it. Many kinds of people knew how to do just that, but then again, only the people in this room had enough money to not make it a problem. That thought wasn’t the road he was willing to go on right now, so instead, he focused on his old friend, his next comment making him snort. “Come on, man, Robin’s costume’s the worst. Consider me Nightwing or someone like that, and I might be in.” He was itching to get away from the crowds of annoying people but there was odd fun in testing Nicky’s patience.
At least, that is, until he brought up his sister. “That is a blind date match, I swear.” As if he needed any excuses for that. Still, he nodded at the older man, immediately agreeing to whatever adventure they were about to go on. “Fine, lead the way. But you’re going in first, cause that’s usually the first that gets captured first.”
lukas hated wearing this monkey suit in a room full of people who were so pretentious about their ridiculously expensive outfits. he knew he looked the part and looked good. art worthy even. but it didn't mean he enjoyed it, even if he was confident. " I'll pay you twenty dollars to go spill something and cause a scene. I'm so bored. " he murmured to the person next to him.
“You really think that’s what’s going to cause a scene?” Nate questioned the other as the offer was made. Twenty dollars was tempting though, and could he really destroy his reputation even more than what it currently was? That was doubtful. „I‘d say, someone should maybe climb one of the statues. Get the attention of the security, that might cause a little more of a scene. Although, aren‘t these the kind of people who brush everything under the rug and pretend that things don‘t happen around them?“
“Oh wow - I didn’t realise there were cars in the museum,” Dove teased as she moved closer to Nate. So used to seeing him in his work coveralls, she gave an appreciative all-over glance. It was strange to see him without any dark smudges and cleaner hands. Her baby Lila, a beat-up yellow beetle, was a constant visitor to the shop Nate worked at. Repairs were expensive and Dove was getting them done in piecemeal, when she could afford them. “How’d you swing a ticket to this party?”
“Are there?” Nate perked up at the mere possibility of something familiar to him being here, even if it was nothing but said possibility. On a more positive – or maybe concerning – note, he found a yet another familiar face here, and at least that made the night so much better. “Look at you, you look great!” He was quick to compliment her, because he could only imagine how much work had to be put into a somewhat themed party look. Even he had to go to more than a single secondhand store to find the suit he was wearing tonight. The horrors of blending in with the rich were far too familiar to Nate, after all. “Oh, you know. Since I do so well with the crowds, someone with an awesome sense of humour figured that this was the way to go.” He joked with a grin on his face. “Not that I’m complaining too much. Free drinks and free food are totally worth it.”

the way he stared ahead wasn't loaded with tension, but almost conspicuously absent of it -- like it was too frosty a response to someone he hadn't seen in so long. and yet, that somehow felt like no time at all, because yujin had expected the cigarette to light itself, had watched it from the corner of his eye like a note in a melody he could still hum to himself. he shrugged. "perk's mostly money. in fact, they pay me extra to show up here, cause i wouldn't otherwise. i'm not really a party kinda guy, anyway," yujin said. "but this one's particularly bad, i'd say. i'd offer to get you a drink, but it's an open bar, so that doesn't really count for anything."
“Isn’t that the dream?” It could have easily been a yet another snarky comment Nate could have offered Yujin’s way, but it wasn’t meant to be that. Their paths were no longer linked, with the two having chosen so differently in life. In a way, it was painful, to think that the man standing next to him had once been so close to him, had been someone he could rely on. It would have been easy to fall back into their old ways, pretend that nothing had happened, but alas; it was too late. “Oh yeah, you must be super important to them if they let you in dressed like that.” This wasn’t a dig either; instead, Nate mustered up a smile in between the drags of his cigarette. If it had to be anyone, he would have expected Yujin to show up to something this fancy wearing a hoodie. “Still would’ve taken that drink, though.” It was the thought that counted, although, it could only remain that; a thought. “Why are they so desperate to have you here tonight?”
she didn't really know nate fields, but she of course knew of him. just that had been enough for rosa to agree to be his date for the evening when the possibility had floated. there was something she found intriguing about him, though perhaps it was in the same way she watched with interest whenever she was faced with something unfamiliar -- with this careful eye, balancing on the edge of commitment, like she was a flighty deer and could still back out at any moment and return to a more comforting known, rather than unknown.
and all of that held up really well in theory, until he said you look amazing, and rosa started turning bright red on the spot. "i -- i mean," she started, stuttered, "i can go stand next t-to one of those statues. i'll be really still. i'll -- i'll be the easiest date you've ever had, actually, just--" she gestured vaguely, "over there, in a corner, not moving. how's that sound?"
It was adorable, how quickly the girl reacted to Nate‘s compliments, and it made him smile. The night was already off to a good start – of course, he knew of Rosa, with her brother being a friend of his – but given his own status, it wasn‘t like he had ever had a chance to actually get to know her, or properly meet her. Surely, tonight was a great night for that. „No, no, don‘t!” he assured her quickly with a shake of his head. “Where’s the fun in that? Just standing in the corner sounds like the most miserable thing to do tonight, and honestly, you should be beneath that. Walk around and make everyone jealous of you. If you put so much thought and work into your looks, then you deserve to show it off.” He encouraged her, offering his arm for her to hold onto. “Let’s go and do that. Trust me, you’re gonna vow everyone.”
"the drinks are strong as fuck, too," alba remarked. she'd been sipping ever so slowly on the same cocktail all night, but she'd become awfully familiar with what a crowd would feel like after most mouths in it had consumed enough alcohol. it was now, when everything slowed a little, when the people wandered rather than crossing the room in straight lines. alba shrugged. "hey, if you're worried about them being too rich, we can always go and steal some jewelry off them. they're too drunk to even notice, i bet. and i'm very persuasive, anyway."
“Really? Anything you’d recommend?” Nate grinned at the familiar face. He knew he could rely on her when it came to drink recommendations, and if anything was decent, then the champagne he was currently drinking would be nothing but a starter for the night. Truth to be told, he knew he’d need that, especially given the kind of people that were wandering around. “So, kinda try to pull Robin Hood off, but without them even noticing?” He mused. “Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if they hand their expensive jewellery over to you willingly. Actually – you should try and get them to do that.”
Buffy glances towards one of the paintings hanging along the wall before lifting her champagne flute ever so slightly.
"Looking at the paintings might not help, but the money does." The corner of her mouth then pulling into an amused smile. "If pretending to like a few paintings gets enough checks signed by the end of the night then I'd call that a fair trade. Wouldn't you?"
“Maybe.” Nate agreed with a shrug. “But does staring at the same paintings over and over again guarantee that the money from those cheques reaches the people who need it?” It was almost a philosophical question, and he wasn’t the most righteous person in the room to query that, either. Granted, he was so far away from being rich – further than probably anyone in this room – but he could always do better. Rather than thinking too much about it, Nate drowned the rest of his champagne, already on the lookout for another glass. “Now if they went out and provided food to those in need, and then wrote cheques afterwards, I think that would stand out more than fancy clothes and tiny plates of food.”
The observation beside him earns little more than the slightest turn of his head. He studies the stranger for a moment, weighing the remark against the room around them. "As opposed to...?" He asks at last, his tone even. Christian has never had much patience for people who treat wealth itself as a moral failing -- he finds it to be incredibly lazy. "Provided the money reaches the people it's meant to reach, I'm not entirely sure it matters whether it arrives by way of champagne or paper cups." A beat. "If the portions were bigger, would that satisfy you?"
“Actually, going out there and making a difference.” Nate shrugged, as if it was the most natural answer out there. He liked to believe that he helped out where he could himself – whether it was a sandwich and a drink to the same guy he met in the streets during his lunch break, or whether it was a free quick fix of a car for someone who was obviously struggling. He probably could’ve done more, as everybody else in this room. “See, that’s the key point, right?” Nate smiled at the other, despite his lack of emotions present. “If the money reaches people and doesn’t land in the pockets of those who run these non-profits.” It was too kind to assume that people weren’t going to abuse their power. “Of course! At some point, it feels awkward going back for the tenth tiny plate.”

authenticity is a luxury rarely afforded by men like him, but somehow, somewhat miraculously, nathan's words draw a genuine bout of laughter from within him. the younger man would never come to possess the precious knowledge of it, but benjamin indeed had more in common with the likes of them than most in their social circles. ❝ some features are more universal than you'd initially think. ❞ an absent-mindedly mused thought, laced with what he hopes comes across as good-natured agreement.
then nathan tacks on the rest of his response and, as is appropriate, some of his geniality vanishes. benjamin's mouth becomes a straight line, downturned corners, and a hint of a concerned hum slips through. ❝ you don't sound like it's been, as you said, alright. ❞ he comments, though that observation is all he offers—for now. a quiet moment lands as he considers his own reply. ❝ i actually don't attend these events as often as i should. ❞ another rare moment of honesty; who cared if it was in service of a lie. ❝ i do enjoy them, to a certain degree, but work keeps me busy most of the time. ❞
“Oh yeah, I can imagine. We’re all just weird and fucked up people in the end, some just have more power, money and privilege than the others.” It went so much further than that, but given the light tone of their conversation – and the circumstances – Nate wasn’t willing to discuss it any deeper. Not tonight, not when alcohol was flowing freely, and was literally free. “It’s like being a drunk. Much more acceptable if you’re wearing a fancy suit and drinking some fancy and aged bottle of whiskey or something like that.”
“I need another glass or two and it’ll sound more genuine.” He assured the other with a smile, despite the man’s apparent worry. It was unusual to have someone actually concerned about something like that; unheard of in these circles, in particular. “You sound like you don’t really mind missing out on these events.” It seemed obvious, and completely understandable, at least. “Don’t tell me someone- or something – forced you here.”
the unfamiliar voice beckoned claudia's attention away from a large-scale painting and she turned just in time to watch its owner study his food. a dimly amused grin pulled at one corner of her lips, entertained by sight and ultimate decision to inhale the app in one go. "you mock, but then do the thing you're mocking," claudia noted, tone lacking any notes of snark or judgement. pure observation bordering on intrigue. she could argue that the staring made people spend money that did go to the right places, that people like her did what good they could with leftover food and outreach and charity partners. ultimately, though, he was more right than wrong. the disparity was disgusting.
what was the point in arguing with a stranger, tonight of all nights, anyway? "at least it's not a brunch. or a masked ball." quiet laughter trailed the dry humor, aided by more than a dose of sincerity.
“Of course. I’m one of the poors you all swear to feed and clothe, so I might as well enjoy myself for the night.” Nate was the first person to poke fun at himself, because if it wasn’t him, someone would quickly step up to do just that. Besides, he knew better than to turn the invitation down, and not just because of free food and booze; other matters were involved, and being gifted, he knew he had the responsibility to be at least somewhat present. Especially given his history and everything surrounding it.
“Is brunch even worse than this? Is it cause there’s less alcohol involved?” He made a face at the mention of a masquerade, causing him to down the rest of his champagne. “Even the sound of it is obnoxious. Do those actually happen?”
Every Do Not Enter sign has the unfortunate tendency of making Nicky wonder what's on the other side. And so, poorly hidden behind one of the marble pillars, he catches Nate's attention with a sharp whistle, followed by a quick jerk of his chin. C'mere. As Nate wanders over, he leans in slightly, and a slow grin tugs at one corner of his mouth - the kind that usually precedes an exceptionally bad idea. With his voice lowered, there's really only one thing left to say: "There's a basement."
Nate was in a desperate need to get away from the people, so when a sharp whistle from Nicky caught his attention, he didn't think much, following it immediately. Perhaps it wasn't the best of ideas, but he was running out of options, and at least Nicky was someone who treated him normally. There could be a debate whether they wouldn't get into trouble, but that was a risk he was willing to take.
"Really?" He asked the other casually, looking over the painfully obvious sign and the implications it carried. Still, it was better to break the rules than mingle with the same boring people over and over again. "And you're telling me you haven't explored it yet? Shocking." he couldn't help but tease Nicky. And yet, he wasn't backing out of it either, observing the people around them, as if to wait for the perfect opportunity to disappear. "Don't tell me you've been waiting for me."
Naturally, the young woman stood out, looking absolutely amazing in the obviously well-thought out and curated appearance, and it almost made Nate feel bad about his own lack of input into his clothing. He did his best, but who was he to compete with someone like a Russo? All he could do was be happy that he had managed to end up with a date like her to an event like this.
"You look amazing. Honestly, you look like a statue. Or one of those ladies in the paintings." He complimented her, a smile on his face making it all the more genuine. Maybe if he stuck around her, people would be staring at her, and not at him for a nice change. "Would you like something to drink?"

location: the gardens at the back of the museum, a little into the evening
"i feel like this is the kind of evening that makes people become smokers." it was dark now, the landscaped gardens lit in the warm-yellow of fairylights and recessed floorlights, drawing delicate patterns of walkways along the different gravel paths. all this to say, yujin had had a couple drinks and no longer knew what to do with his hands -- the lights were these moving figures now, expanding and retracting, the buzz of the evening settling into a hum now he was further removed from it. he loosely held a cigarette between his lips as he lit it, and became awfully aware of the fact that nothing bad had happened yet, which seemed an omen more than it did reassuring. "do you want one?" yujin asked, held up the pack of cigarettes he rarely drew from his pocket, "i wouldn't blame you if you did."
The last time Nate had seen Yujin was certainly in far less glamorous circumstances, to put it lightly. He had been craving to get away from the people, from the stares the moment he walked in, and now that Nate had a moment to himself, he wasn't really on his own, either. It was painfully funny, in a way; years ago, being around Yujin felt comforting, but now, it felt odd. The kind of odd that he absolutely loathed. "Sure." He wasn't going to say no to a free cigarette. The moment it touched his fingers, it lit up, allowing Nate to take a long, well-needed drag out of it. "So I take it, this isn't one of the parties you're so keen about? Isn't it part of the perks of living this life?"

the young mister fields' reaction elicits a soft grin out of benjamin; the corners of his lips tug upward as he listens. it is a very human response, expected of someone unaccustomed to the nature of their social circles' playground. and while he would never make the mistake of declaring nathan a sitting duck, here, in the belly of the beast, he does display certain characteristics of a lamb in the den of lions. ❝ that we do, indeed. ❞ benjamin chuckles amicably, and lifts his own champagne glass so that the lip of it touches his bottom lip. ❝ and i'm afraid it's only going to become more intolerable once everyone's had a few drinks. ❞ his lips part; champagne slides smoothly down his throat; his hand, while retaining a hold on his glass, falls back to his side. benjamin's gaze softens—time for another performance—as it lands properly on nathan. ❝ i hope you've been treated with appropriate courtesy. ❞ unlikely, but that would be something he can use now or later.
"So at least you've got that in common with the rest of us, the commoners and the poor." Nate wasn't trying to be sarcastic, yet he couldn't help it. Granted, he wasn't born in the unfortunate circumstances - sans everything that happened with his father - but he could never imagine being so rich that this was someone's pastime. Not to mention, being constantly surrounded by people, being looked at, whispered about... the thought alone made him down the rest of his champagne, in a very un-gentleman-like manner. "It's been alright." He assured the other with a much more tense smile, not really able to hide his emotions all that well. "How about you? You having fun? Or... I don't know, more fun than usual during these parties?"
"So this is what the rich do," Nate spoke as he picked up another hors d'oeuvre, inspecting it for a moment before eating it in one bite. It was okay, although he was the first to admit that he wasn't used to such rich tastes. "Look fancy, eat tiny portions, and stare at the paintings and stuff like that, pretending that it helps whatever cause they're supporting?" He asked the person nearby, picking up a glass of champagne next. It certainly wasn't the usual stuff he drank, but it was free. "At least the drinks are good, I have to agree on that."
