For The Hell Of It - oil on canvas - 32x38 inches - May 2024 This painting was an odyssey! I originally started it at the beginning of 2023. I worked for months, putting together this rather creepy image, a meditation on the ruinous actors in contemporary life. I did some traveling in the middle of that time, which is a thing that has unfortunate tendency to throw me off. I finally called it done in April of ’23. Once framed, it hung on the wall of our dining room, where I could see it whenever I sat on the couch. And for the next 8 months, it bothered me. I’d tried some things with color that were successful as far as what I was trying, but they just did not suit the image. So in December, I decided I’d take another run at it. I started some other, smaller pieces along the way, but basically ended up repainting almost this entire canvas. It’s like I spent 96 hours making an underpainting. I repainted the figures completely. I added to the grass. I painted and repainted the sky several times, trying to get the colors, shapes and depth I wanted. I learned a lot about how to go from purple through pink to orange without going brown, somewhere (which is damn hard, and requires the right red for the job). And, finally, I mostly got what I was after. It only took another 134 hours. I hope you like it. I will, at some point. Right now, I mostly just feel relieved it’s finally done.

Haven - oil on canvas - 12x12 inches - 2022-2024 This one sure was complicated, especially for such a small piece! I started it back at the end of 2022. It’s gone through a couple of revisions, but it’s finally done right! I hope you dig.

I started this one back in September, and finally finished it! Come Back - 24x30 inch oil on canvas - January 2024

I’ve been going back into this one that I started a year ago. It had issues, and I’ve had a lot of time to think about how to fix them. Now, I am.

I thought this painting was done in the spring. It wasn’t. I had painted the sky with other, less saturated colors, for some reason. It’s better, like this.

I fixed the clouds, added a few highlights in other places. Maybe it’s done? Gimme a week or so to be sure. There are multiple layers that dried differently, so I really need to oil it out to be sure I got everything right.

Got those highlights in on the other side, tonight. It’s getting closer.

I’ve been sick for a few days (not Covid) and am still feeling run down… but I was able to paint a little. It came out better than I thought it would. (Have to get the highlights on those rocks on the left, tomorrow.)

Rain Will Come - oil on panel - 24x18 inches - 2021-2023 This painting was originally done back in the summer of ’21. I was never quite satisfied with how it turned out, so I fixed a few things in October of this year. Some of those fixes involved glazing over the rubble with a transparent layer of paint that took forever to dry. I was finally able to get a photo of it this weekend. I feel like it's a much more coherent image, now. I hope you enjoy it.

Time sure flies, when you’re painting thousands of little dots. (It really does, though.)
