I feel like it’s not talked about that much that Lord Dregg left such an impact on Raphael that he developed a fear of all types of bugs.
Cause in the very beginning of the series, Raph is only scared of cockroaches, he seems perfectly fine with any other types of bugs like the wasp mutants, but after his encounter with Lord Dregg in the space arc in season 4, it’s established that he now has a fear of all kinds of insects. Dregg also appears in Raph’s fear hallucination many times.
Lord Dregg traumatized Raph so hard that his phobia evolved from one bug to ALL OF THEM!

Hello! So, there’s a lot of well-loved duos in TMNT (A-Team, B-Team, April and Casey) but do you think there’s a duo that’s underrated?
[A just for fun question so feel free not to answer. ☺️🐢💚]
Thanks for the ask!
When I thought about this, I realized I had a bit of a weird answer, because I have only ever experienced this duo through fan content. However, I've always found the idea of it very compelling and it's one of the reasons that I really, really need to just get my butt in gear and read IDW already!
Anyways, the duo is,
Mikey and Woody Dirkins
It's actually mind blowing to me how rarely Mikey is given a peer or contemporary in the various iterations. Typically Raph's got Casey, Donatello is often closest to April and Leatherhead, Leo often finds kindred spirits in Usagi and Karai.
And while Mikey is often close to LH, they don't usually feel like peers in the same way, say Mondo Gecko does, but Mondo often feels like a pretty direct mirror of Mikey that falls very flat for me.
But Woody - a normal human teen that works at a pizzeria - makes SO much sense as a friend for Mikey. I think it plays really well into Mikey's own desire to be a normal teenager, to have someone he can go to outside of his family and just feel 'normal' around. April and Casey throw themselves into the Turtle's lives and become a part of their family, but I can see Mikey escaping into Woody's life, giving him a glimpse into the world he would love to be a part of. He's still a reflection of Mikey; a kind, considerate young man, but he hasn't had to deal with the harsh reality Mikey was born into. There's so much angst potential for that to be corrupted by Mikey's life and enemies putting Woody in danger too.
I've tried not to spoil myself too much on IDW so I'm not sure how well the comics deliver on the potential of this duo, but everything I've seen and the content fans have made, really makes me wish we got to see this character, or another similar dynamic like this for Mikey, in more iterations.
It just feels like Mikey having a human friend like this should be as fundamental to his character as Raph having a Casey is. I don't know - am I crazy?
12 brothers showing affection towards the youngest with head pats 🧡💖🐢
It makes me sad that people still don’t know what Mikey’s ‘thing’ is.
I was watching Tales and they flat out have someone asks what his thing is if Leo is the Leader, Raph is the tough one and Donnie is the smart one.
I see people asking to this day what his role on the team is.
I remember a review when Rise came out asking if all the characters are funny party dudes, what makes Mikey stand out?
It drives me cuckoo with a side of bananas.
Yes,Mikey is the Goof off, yes he’s the jokester, yes he’s the chill one but he’s so so much more than that.
Across every iteration of Tmnt, there has always been a major trait unique to Mikey.
His heart!
Mikey is the HEART.
The most empathetic of the brothers,
the most emotionally intelligent.
The one always willing to reach out and help someone
Even if he has to go against his own FATHER!
The sunshine in the dark!
The emotional center!
HOW DO PEOPLE NOT KNOW THIS! HOW IS THIS NOT THE MOST OBVIOUS THING EVER?!
Michelangelo's EQ (emotional intelligence) is off the charts. He has an incredible ability to read people and that insight into others gives him quite an advantage. His "heart" has saved the day on multiple occasions and Mikey should never be underestimated. If you're an enemy and believe you can discount him as useless, you have made a fatal mistake.
Yeeeeeeesssssss!!! This is all so beautifully said!! The only time I can recall an iteration of Tmnt outright saying Mikey is the heart is the 2016 movie in this scene.
This is in reference to their insults of these same roles earlier in the movie which makes this powerful because they are recognizing what they previously viewed as flaws as strengths and as important. So Donnie saying they need heart shows they know that Mikey's role is the heart, not the cute one, not the wildcard, not the goofball, he is their heart.
In some marketing for certain iterations when introducing the turtles they often say that Mikey is the wildcard or the pizza lover, I can't recall a TV series actually stating that Mikey's role is the heart. Which is a shame because I think that unfortunately aids people who aren't familiar with his character to struggle to see his role. I have also not seen all marketing for all iterations so please correct me if anyone has seen differently!
Thank you for this beautiful post showing how impactful and important Mikey's role is my heart is very happy :')

Leo let go of your brother i dont think he wants hugs rn ( •̀⤙•́ )
hi guys!! I started doing digital art!! ᕙ( •̀ ᗜ •́ )ᕗ
“He’s looks like that because he’s irritated!” Naw, his ass is just near-sighted.
For those of you calling 2012 Mikey innocent and constantly babying him and saying he must be protected, you are literally doing the exact thing that he hates.
2012 Mikey has stated in the show that he hates being treated like a child and doesn’t like it when people look/treat him as such. Yes, his brothers are still gonna be protective of him but that’s brotherly instincts. He is the youngest after all.
But we have to remember that in the end…
Mikey is NOT innocent. He has committed manslaughter. He literally ate PizzaFace alive, who is a mutant that used to be a living human being.
Mikey does NOT need to be protected. He can handle himself. He managed to figure out and survive in Dimension X all on his own for what seemed like weeks/months. He also took on villains like Tiger Claw, Rahzar and Newtralizer by himself!
Mikey is NOT a baby. Mikey is a skilled ninja. Splinter has stated that Mikey has the highest intuition compared to his brothers. He was also willing sacrifice and die for his friends and family in an attempt to to stop Newtrailzer, staying behind as Dregg’s ship exploded.
If I remember correctly before Bradford mutated Mikey tried to kill him from behind with the blade of his kusarigama, because he nearly killed Donnie.
In the show after he is trapped in Dimension X for the first time, Mikey is depicted to be a genius at chemistry comparable or even better than Donnie. Mikey just has a really bad short term memory, dude really needs to get into writing his thoughts down. Which doesn’t make any sense considering the show also insinuates he has a photographic memory in the same episode...
It’s like… he didn’t even randomly mixed a bunch of chemicals together either, he named each one before adding it in.
“Accidentally”? No hate to you, and I know it was just in the tags but my point was that he didn’t just do it by accident, the show just loves to downplay his talent at chemistry. It’s really easy to see how the fandom underestimates 2012 Mikey because his family does the same exact thing.
There’s even that episode where the boys have to visit Dimension X again for whatever reasons and Mikey is the one to save the day. The show once again downplays it, saying that Mikey is only smart in Dimension X because only someone backwards would succeed in backwards land, but he outshines the tech guy at advanced super tech, he outshines the aggressive fighter at tactical fighting and he outshines the leader at leading under pressure but of course “it was just a fluke” like every other time Mikey shines in the show.
I know he’s not always showcasing his skill as a chemist all the time but like… right when Donnie failed at making a retro mutagen, Mikey “tries” his own hand at it. Named each chemical he puts into it and then succeeds on his first try. Except when he can’t recall exactly what every chemicals he put into it was Donnie and Splinter writes Mikey invention Retro mutagen as an accident and just “Mikey being Mikey”.
As if Mikey being Mikey didn’t involve him using his photographic memory to use what he learned in Dimension X, spying on the Kraang, to reverse engineer a cure to mutagen that even Donnie couldn’t do.
The relationship between 2012 Leo and 2012 Raph is so deep and profound and powerful that it beats all others.
We as a fandom have decided to appoint those two twins, that should be a big enough hint of how close Leo and Raph are but there's so much more.
It not just big moments and clear ones but subtle things too. And while I can form a whole list of minute, ignorable moments from 2012 series that show how close this version of these two brothers are, there's one specific line I want to talk about.
Something Raph said in Broken Foot and the intonation of his voice as he said it.
"Remember how I wanted to dress up as the Night Watcher vigilante and you talked me out of it?"
Here's the thing, in that particular episode, Leo messed up. And it wasn't the first time that had happened but notice how this time, a part him knew he wasn't doing the correct thing while a different part said the opposite. Leo wanted to go out and destroy Footbot factories with Karai and Shini, but he didn't want to hide his part. That teenage part also just wanted to let loose without a responsibility of his team pressing down. Leo doesn't have his personal friends in this series like his brothers do and this might be the one time he felt like he was both making a difference and hanging out with his own friends but diverging from the point.
What I wanted to point out was Raph's words and how he tried to convince Leo to stop doing what he was doing with a means completely different from how he used to in earlier seasons. There are times when Raphael is the only one in the family who has common sense and he tends to observe and notice things which others aren't ready to accept. If you remember, the last couple of times Leo had trusted Karai, Raph was angry and annoyed. He had yelled at Leo but this time, he spoke kindly, in an understanding manner. Instead of outright arguing or refuting him, he related to him. And tried to remind him why this was a bad idea without revealing both their inner thoughts and reasons to everyone present. If you notice these two in the bg of the series, they communicate in a unique way, through silent looks and gestures nobody else seems to be privy to and they do it almost every single episode. Leo and Raph just, get each other. And this is why whenever they argue, it's usually over each other's flaws. They know one another so well that they argue when they know the other is making a mistake and is too stubborn to see it.
Anyways, in that episode, this one line indicates how Raphael was literally the only one who both understood Leo and was actually sincere with him without making him guilt trip like Splinter and April or manipulating him like Karai.
Moreover, it hints to a moment not shown in the series itself which deepens their bond.
Remember what happened the last time a Raphael decided to vigilante as Night Watcher and Leo found out?
Yeah...
But that didn't happen with the 2012 version. Leo managed to talk Raph out of it and Raph remembers that fondly with an understanding of the recklessness of the idea; "Just saying. It sounds like something I would do."
There was no fight, no epic dramatic battle, no such moment where one of them almost killed the other. No, Leo talked the reckless, stubborn, usually unreasonably hotheaded Raph out of it. Just like that.
And that, in itself, says a lot about how deep and profound their bond is. Leo and Raph have a special dynamic of their own in most iterations but in the 2012 series, it is something else entirely. It is so much deeper than it is in other iterations and I speak from the countless moments in canon. Not only are there numerous big plot relevant and noticeable moments of them supporting each other but also hundreds of tiny subtle moments of them understanding each other like no one else does.
YES!!! THIS!!!
I feel like the subtler moments you mentioned that really show how close they are is something the audience really starts to notice as you rewatch the series. Obviously we will notice the big moments between these two on the first watch through as they usually have plot/emotional importance, and then we will have a deeper appreciation for those moments on the 2nd watch. But on each subsequent rewatch after that you start to notice them together in the background more, you start to notice the looks they communicate with, you start to notice all the details the writers and animators put in those subtle moments to show just how close they are. I've seen some people describe these two as 2 sides of the same coin and I think that fits pretty well. While they obviously have their differences, they are primarily very similar which is part of why they clash.
I'm so glad you mentioned that line from Raph too I think about it all the time!! I feel like it really showcases the differences in the relationships between the two brothers in 07 and 12. Given the family dynamic in the 07 movie I find it doubtful that Leo would have been able to talk him out of it had he been there when Raph decided to start going out as the Nightwatcher. Granted, maybe he never would have felt the need to adopt the persona if Leo had stayed, but we don't know that for sure because their relationship feels different. If I'm remembering the info correctly that a fellow fan provided me of what their relationship was like in the prequel comics to the movie, I don't think 07 Leo would have known what to say to truly get Raph to rethink his Nightwatcher plan. And that anything he did say would have caused more friction and conflict between the two, pushing Raph to become the Nightwatcher anyway.
On the contrary, like you mentioned, 12 Leo and Raph are close enough that Leo not only found out about his plans before he started, but managed to talk Raph out of it without a fight that almost ends in one killing the other. What went on in that convo we will never know, but the fact that they had it and it worked shows how well 12 Leo knows his brother, and how much Raph respects and loves Leo cause he listened to him.
And yes the tone, omg the tone!! So soft, so playful, just a little teasing. :) In that moment I feel that he is seeing his leader as his brother, a teen who occasionally makes dumb decisions like him. And he will stick by Leo and help him figure out how to handle his dumb decision, just like he did when Raph tried to go out as the Nightwatcher.

Truthfully, 2012 Mikey should have had a field day the moment he realized that the Shredder was technically his uncle.
He’d could have been fighting some foot clan members, Chris Bradford, and/or Xever and the moment they hit him he’d act all offended and be like “my Uncle Shredder will hear about this!”
Mikey, from his cage: how come you didn’t send us any birthday gifts this year?
The Shredder:
Mikey: come to think of it you didn’t send any last year either.
The Shredder:
Mikey: you owe me like 15 years worth of birthday presents, uncle.
Raph is one of those kids that will not eat broccoli, but might partake in munching on dirt.
