what is the purpose to your life if you are a bossiny? devote all your time to learning about ONE rich ass family, including their weird ass initiation ritual, puzzle solutions, and treasure just so you can train the next member of the family on the stuff you already know and play cryptic tech support for them as you watch them try to solve all the puzzles on their own??

I have ended my 1st anniversary with playing all 28 games + Dossier! To celebrate, here’s a weird clip I found in the audio files. It’s after the end puzzle. I’d guess it was a filler for the beta version? End01 is the actual “CURSE YOU NANCY DREW” type thing, so this isn’t just a random ‘for laughs’ thing.
Darn it. You said don’t listen if you don’t want the ending spoiled and I thought well I’ve played the game 500 times I should be good. Little did I know the culprit was the wicked witch of the west. Talk about spoilers
Well this fucking sucks.
Apparently Digital River - the company that handled HeR Interactive's digital games sales closed. HeR no longer has access to those sale records and basically can't do anything about sales beyond 5 years ago.
So I'm shit out of luck. I had the bonus edition of all the games I'm missing - you get to collect phone charms in the game and you get an award for getting them all, you got the bonus edition with pre-orders.
So looks like my collection is no longer complete and I need 3 more games. I've got them on my steam wishlist so I'll wait and see if they go on sale.
I mean it's kind of my own fault for not realizing I had to save more than the download manager. Basically for games 28 onward when you download your game from the server you download an download manager exe, which then downloads the actual install files (previous digital games had downloaded a zip file). With the servers offline those download manager files no longer work. And I didn't save the install files. I can't remember if they warn you of that or not. If not they should.
Thankfully the download managers for MID and KEY still work. I'm going to make sure the install files are uploaded to my external where I keep the ND games. Starting to think I should go back to buying physical copies of stuff tbh.
All the articles online are only talking about the company's bankruptcy (which is understandable), but in terms of what HeR has to say about it, all I could find is an article from 2012. This honestly sucks for any ND fans out there who relied on the digital purchases. I'm reblogging just as a heads-up to anyone out there for whom this may apply to (and trying to see if there are any potential solutions as well).
Just an FYI you can still access the bonus versions from any copy of the game (I have all the bonus versions as physical copies but I rebought the series on steam a couple of years ago for convenience and you can pry the bonus versions from my cold dead hands)
Here’s what you do:
Press ctrl+shift+tab+c and a box shows up. Go to either ‘Flags’ or ‘Logic’ depending on the game and search for ‘Bonus’. Check the box next to the bonus version flag, they’re named different things in different games but it should be obvious. If you want the phone games do the same thing searching for ‘games’ or ‘phone’ or whatever. Check that box too and hit save. Now you once again have the bonus version that you bought and paid for!
!!! yes!!!! Oh I love you random internet stranger. Just tried it on Ghost of Thornton Hall and it worked great. So that's one bright spot anyway!

That there's this unspoken agreement that you're allowed to dump on the things you love. Like we can make fun of Nancy all day for asking insensitive questions or having terrible style or being the world's worst girlfriend but the SECOND anyone outside the fandom tries to come for our girl, we would be grabbing the pitchforks.

I noticed something while replaying Ghost of Thornton Hall that for me confirms that Clara did willfully murder Charlette.
Clara may tell you in the end that it was an accident, but she also says that one other time about a different family member she wronged.
She tells you that she never meant for Wade to go to jail, that she just wanted to scare him; similar words she uses when confessing Charlette's death. Wade on the other hand outright says that it's a lie in his case, since Clara would visit the jail just to laugh at him.
Harper even calls Clara a "Revisionist".
It sounds as though Clara wants to believe these things were accidents, so she refuses to accept the truth of her own actions. I definitely believe she murdered Charlette intentionally--even if she wishes she could take it back.
Here’s another piece of info - charlotte’s ghost (or jessalyn/harper dressing up as her or your CO2 hallucinations) is wearing the necklace that Clara keeps in her briefcase
I assume that means she was wearing it the night she died
So why would clara keep that on her person at all times if it was an accident? I don’t remember if we ever get to see what was in it but jessalyn reads whatever message there is and immediately knows that her mom was responsible for the fire. Clara certainly didn’t have a guilty enough conscience to come clean, she was actively hiding the evidence for decades. So she was certainly revising history when she became instantly remorseful after being caught
In fact, what if part of the struggle that led to the fire involved her ripping the necklace off of Charlotte? Or (yikes) if she grabbed it after she died?
Either way Charlotte died and Clara’s instinct was to take her necklace and hide it for decades
So fun fact, if you click on the car again after she says this, the game will actually let you drive away. There's a different driveway animation with Jim Archer's car still parked by the side of the road, and it will still be there when you come back. I found this out today playing with my boyfriend who likes doing things out of order and told me to click on the car again. It literally never occurred to me prior to today that that was possible lol. Spent a good ten minutes driving everywhere in town, there are different audio clips for every single place than what you get showing up for the first time with a telegram!
It was a real treat to do something brand new in a game I've played ten million times lol

Charlotte's room makes me really sad. When you first come in, it looks like her blanket is on the floor, like she just woke up that morning and threw it off her bed while she was getting ready. Then you turn to look at her bed and a spider crawls across it, reminding you that no one has been here in a long time, and it doesn't belong to Charlotte anymore - it belongs to the other creatures that have made Thornton hall home over the last decades. The game says no one has been here since the night Charlotte died. Who covered the furniture with sheets? One part of me wants to think that she was doing some home decorating - it's her 21st birthday, she's gonna paint her whole room and start fresh, but never gets to. Another part of me wonders if Charlotte knew at that point she didn't have much time left, and wanted to make sure her belongings lasted longer than her. I have another theory - maybe someone HAS been in there since her death. On this playthrough, I walked into the parlor to look under the floorboards, and Clara wasn't there. I exited, and immediately turned around and went back in, and there she was. Now this could of course be just a game mechanic, but plot-wise it makes me think that maybe Clara knew about the secret passageway to Charlotte's room. Maybe it was Clara that wanted to cover up the furniture, to preserve her wealth and inheritance from decaying like the rest of the house. It's interesting that the desk is uncovered. Maybe Clara had been in there, looking for Charlotte's will, reading her diary, unable to open her jewelry box, leaving the room alone once she became satisfied there was nothing in there that would tie her to the fire. And that circular box, the one that holds the Easter eggs and the beyond creepy note that sounds like Charlotte is writing to you from beyond the grave, inviting you to a masquerade with the dead? Maybe it's there for Clara to read. To remind her of what she did. To let her know that Charlotte hasn't forgotten. That her room still belongs to her.
Or maybe not! I think that the hauntings were all carbon monoxide. But who put the tarps over the furniture???
bf and i are sick in bed and we just played about four solid hours of CUR straight through, 90% finished and just need to do the gargoyle thing to finish lighting the forge and ned calls and my cursor disappears and there is no way out of this except force quitting brb losing my entire goddamn mind
