Notes: When I was younger, I was drawn to Botticelli—his mythological subjects and ideal beauty fascinated me. Over the years, however, I have come to appreciate Fra Filippo Lippi more. His quiet elegance and understated humanity feel timeless to me.

Notes: At first, my reaction was simply, "It's Picasso—a real Picasso!"
Now, I see the essence of the saltimbanque. Behind those who entertain others, I sense the silent cry of Vesti la giubba ("Put on the costume") from the opera Pagliacci. To me, the saltimbanque represents a life lived with both freedom and uncertainty, embraced with quiet dignity.

Notes: When I first saw this painting, I wondered why an artist would choose to depict such an unsettling scene. At the time, I was too young to understand the feelings or circumstances of either the old man or the young woman.

Notes: I knew the story of Salome before I knew the painter. The painting was small and easy to miss among larger tempera panels, so I was surprised to find it available as a postcard.
