        ❛     it’s  cheap,  and  close.    but  you’re  the  one  who  began  setting  up  near  my  house  in  the  first  place.     ❜      he’s  rude.    it’s  amusing,  maybe,  for  a  moment.    but  that  passes.

and  his  hand  makes  contact  with  the  plastic  of  his  cup  lid,  dancing  circles  on  the  brim,  nails  chaffing.    could  he  say  he  was  interested  in  small  talk?    no  —  not  really,  he  wasn’t.    but  since  that  day …    (   the  one  he  won’t  forget.    incessant  beeps,  warmth  leaving  the  hand  he  held,  the  sound  of  distant  footsteps.    they’re  thoughts  that  never  leave  his  mind,  his  hands,  or  his  mind.    he  won’t  forget  what  loss  feels  like.   )   since  then,  their  conversations  grew.    like  a  seed  planted  in  the  heel  of  his  shoe,  trampled  on,  crushed,  destroyed,  yet  it  always  remained  somehow,  growing  ever  more  present.    that, he  thinks  is  more  amusing.    but  he  doesn’t  laugh.      ❛     i  could  charge  you  for  loitering  on  my  property,  if  that’s  the  game  you  want  to  play.    ❜      his  head  is  turned,  eyes  glancing  back  to  his  phone,  and  away  from  shoichi,  as  fingers  lift  the  beverage  to  his  mouth.

          “  ...you  really  don’t  have  much  of  a  sense  of  humor.  ”     this  time  it’s  certainly  an  observation  followed  by  a  long,   drawn  out  sigh;   exaggerated.   if  this  was  a  game  then  he’s  quitting  on  round  2  while  he’s  still  in  business.   metaphorical  monopoly  wasn’t  exactly  the  most  enjoyable  especially  when  it  was  his  actual  job  he  was  risking  here.     “  i  was  joking  about  makin’  you  pay  extra   ---  ”     part  of  him  wished  he  wasn’t.   damned  rich  kids.   sure,   living  in  the  truck  is  by  choice,   but  it’s  not  like  he’s  happy  with  it.     “  i’m  too  much  of  a  nice  guy  to  do  that.  ”     there’s  that  business  smile  popping  up  on  shoichi’s  face.   it’s  friendly,   fun,   but  it’s  a  kind  of  look  that  keeps  people  away  because  he’s  only  here  to  sell  some  food.   it’s  amazing  how  good  at  it  he’s  gotten  when  he’s  frustrated  on  a  near  day - to - day  basis.

          “  that’s  pretty  rich,   if  i’m  bein’  honest  here.  ”     a  man  with  far  more  bark  than  he  has  bite.   unnamed  stands  there  with  hands  shoved  in  pockets  and  eyes  narrowed  beneath  a  hat  as  he’s  face  to  face  with  the  person  causing  all  these  incidents  that  had  a  striking  similarity  to  what  the  hanoi  had  done.   comatose  players  with  the  connection  being  the  fact  they  all  cheated  at  the  game;   all  the  unconscious  were  notorious  for  being  horrible  to  the  other  players  and  it  strikes  him  as  odd  that  the  remnants  of  hanoi  would  do  this  sort  of  thing  when  they  surely  cheated  themselves.   what  reason  would  they  even  have?   (   …and  was  this  really  a  person?   someone  had  been  watching  too  many  sci-fi  movies  if  that’s  the  case   —   a  glowing  blue  VR  avatar  was  what  he’d  call  pretty  bland.   at  least  put  on  some  cool  boots  like  he  did!   )
