It is funny to me that Valerius managed to start losing his "humanity" in under three years. Lucio somehow dodged growing any weird parts for two decades, you could even argue that the goat form doesn't count either, yet the wineboy here was making deals like he's speed-running demonhood (any%).
And it's not even clear what he got out of it. He didn't keep the power over the city, he isn't that important to the plot, I'm not sure The Devil ever even acknowledges him?? Man traded a chunk of his soul to force his servants to listen to him and to get an unlimited supply of refilling wine glasses.
Today in "fleeting narrative lines that I wish we knew more about or were expanded upon":
Now, chances are that these are just rumors being rumors, but where's the fun in that?
We do know that the Palace guards are feared in the center city and outright avoided on the outskirts.
It's also worth noting that there was a clear cultural shift that happened between the past and post-plague Vesuvia, both because of The Horrors and because, realistically, there have to be a lot newcomers in the city for it to be as full and active as we see it. My point is that the rumors and distrust of the guards are unlikely to be just some leftovers from Lucio's rule, but rather a more recent development.
Between the coma and the amnesia, I feel like Nadia herself didn't have that much time to earn the reputation (and, well, she probably wouldn't anyway). However, there was another person who, unbeknownst to people of Vesuvia, took charge of the city for a good year and a half directly after Lucio's "murder". Someone who also just happens to look down on commoners, is obsessed with keeping order, and even had some undefined "help" from The Devil...

Very quick and general headcanons for what the M6 do at a Pride Festival/Parade lmao enjoy
Asra
Covered in body glitter (and not much else), will be leaving a sparkly trail behind him every where he goes
Watches the parade just to boo at the corporation floats and collect as much free beads and paraphernalia as possible while drinking a fruity little beverage
Is definitely making out with at least three (3) people by the end of the night, probably during the fireworks
Julian
Brought extra water and sunscreen and bandaids for everyone else but absolutely neglects to follow his own advice and will need to be treated for heat exhaustion at some point
Gets roped into some performance on a stage and kills it - drag queen Julian when
Hosts and wins (barely) a drinking game but yes please some help getting home would be appreciated
Nadia
Enjoys the festivities but prefers to watch the parade from the shaded outdoor balcony of a restaurant where she can sip her drink and wave a flag or clack a fan demurely
Buys herself/her friends/her partner whatever they want from vendors, though she ends up getting a lot of things for free
Somehow finds the best, most private spot to watch the fireworks at the end of the night and invites the rest of the group to join her
Portia
Having the time of her Life, wearing pasties and glitter and maybe she burns a little bit but it could be much worse
Clacking her fan like her life depends on it for every passing float, will have no voice the next day
Spends wayyy too much money on vendors but yes she absolutely needs all of the tacky resin earrings and hey she’s supporting queer small businesses what else do you want from her
Muriel
Only went to make sure Asra had a sober ride home but okay maybe some of this isn’t too bad everyone is so happy and maybe it rubs off a little
Finds a few little trinkets he takes home, like a wolf-shaped crystal necklace and some treats for Inanna
Ends up with a pride flag over his shoulders like a cape by the end of the night and some of Asra’s glitter on his face
Lucio
Finds his way on the biggest loudest float somehow and will chuck beads and flowers and whatever else the float has way too hard at everyone watching
Gets sunburned horribly because he swears he put sunscreen on but doesn’t understand Once is not enough and that jockstrap is not nearly enough coverage
Has the Biggest hangover the next day but he has no Ragrets and will tell anyone who will (or won’t) listen about being hoisted up in the air by drag queens
Finally picked up a stylus after a while, still gotta work on ""quick sketches" that don't take me 5 hours for some reason" but whatever, go my bi disasters
the real fantasy of the arcana game is never having to worry about paying for shit. someone's either got counterfeit pirate money, a nebulously valuable item or service to trade, or the Countess likes y'all enough she just covers all your bills for life

When talking about the horror of demons in the Arcana setting, people (me included, tbf) tend to focus on Valdemar. Which is understandable, mind you, they are a fascinating character from many angles and I could ramble about the lore theories and headcanons for a while! But the other demons are often "overshadowed" by Valdemar, despite being very interesting cases themselves, and representing different "stages" of lost humanity.
Vulgora, in particular, is heavily underused in the topic of horror-esque elements of the Arcana, and in the game itself tbh. I headcanon them to be the second oldest of the Courtiers, and by extension the second most powerful and, frankly, fucked up. While Valdemar is an "eldritch being beyond human comprehension" kind of being, Vulgora is a walking hivemind. Almost literally a swarm of beetles in a trench coat. The implications of that are fascinating. What was the transition from a single individual to a swarm like? How is the swarm maintained? Are the plague-carrier beetles a separate "breed" so to speak, or are they a part of the hivemind too?
Is "Vulgora" the name of the whole swarm, or is there a "beetle royal" in there somewhere that used to be a human?
I do have some thoughts/headcanons about this too! ovo
Vulgora's demonic trait, their one goal and passion, is war. Conflict, violence, however you name it. With them being an ancient being, they could have a major influence on some cultures and territories – like, say, an entire region so prone to violent clashes and full of raiders that it earns a name "Scourgelands". You know, the place where some tribes practice demon worship.
If the Scourgelands are Vulgora's usual playground, it would explain two things: why are beetles seen as a symbol of destruction by cultures of the Scourgelands and the Steppe, and why did a beetle show up at the end of that backstory tale. I don't think it was already a "plague" beetle, but rather a part of Vulgora's swarm that acted as a scout, attracted to the conflict and Vlastomil's "mark".
They were the second demon that Lucio, at the time a terrified freshly exiled 18 year old Montag, met and dealt with. In the following months, as Lucio picks up a new name and cobbles together a merc group, Vulgora would eat real well on the fighting that follows him. Still hounded by fear of his mother finding him, Lucio made more deals to gain power, and in that time some of Vulgora's beetles began merging with Vlastomil's pestilence, turning into the iconic carrier of the plague.
(It's also worth pointing out that this wasn't even the first "red plague" in Vesuvia's history, if Portia's route to be believed it happened before in some form. So I'd say Vulgora and Valdemar know each other rather well and had joined up before, so Valdemar knows the beetles make a great tool for corpse disposal, which was the actual purpose of the beetle well. Whether Vlastomil was present back then is up for debate, though I personally don't think so mainly because I hc him to be somewhere in 300-500 age range)
The "war hivemind" is a good point! Some swarm insects, especially ants, get into pretty intense conflicts (also this is how I find out that Wikipedia has a page about "war in ants" so that's fun), so the insect symbolism for a representation of War makes a lot of sense.
We do know that the demons in Arcana lore used to be humans once, the process can even be reversed if they're not too far gone. We know Volta's backstory fairly well, and some bits of Vlastomil's, but the origin of Vulgora and Valdemar are up for interpretation. From the Arcana artbook:
Vesuvia’s foremost courtiers traded their souls to the Devil in exchange for prolonged life and demonic boons. While their reasons differ, the end result was the same: a lifetime of bondage in the Devil’s service.
In a way, they serve as cautionary tales, showing what happens when one’s dealings with the Devil grow too weighty to bear. While magical connections to beings of realms outside his own allow the Devil’s power to grow, the beings themselves become drained of their humanity. They lose the Upright traits of the Arcana they are closest to, and are reduced to hollowed-out shells representing only the Reversed traits.
Regarding their appearance:
The courtiers in bondage to the Devil are able to maintain the illusion of looking just human enough to pass as eccentric Vesuvian aristocrats... except in the realms of the Arcana, where their fully demonic forms shine through.
We also do get to see how some of them look like when freed from demon magic, so the human "disguises" are fairly close to what they were like as humans. I think it's also a semi-common headcanon that most people can't actually see the weird eyes and whatnot, kind of like the "never-mind-me" spell from Julian's route, and it's just the MC's "magic immunity" that lets the illusion slip somewhat.
Regarding Vulgora's connection to the Red Plague, my headcanon is that the Plague is a magic amalgam that grew and "mutated" as Lucio's unfulfilled deals accumulated. Vulgora's beetles just kind of happened to be a good host/carrier for the disease (see my previous addition to the post).
As for their relationship with Lucio, the artbook describes them as "Lucio’s best frenemy", so that's. an interesting dynamic. Too bad by the time the routes begin, it looks like Vulgora is just out for Lucio's blood. Or soul. The goat needs better friends, more news at 10.
replaying Julian's route while going through a depressive episode hits differently. Of course he overthinks a lot and catastrophizes, when he was just a child out of nowhere he lost everything but his sister on a shipwreck. Of course he's always anxious, he feels like horrible things out of his control may happen to his loved ones. Of course he's self destructive, he thinks that when he can't prevent bad things happening to his loved ones, it's because he isn't enough, he is incompetent and it's all his fault. Of course he feels so guilty all the time, because the alternative means embracing that there are horrible, terrible things he can't do anything about, because they are outside his control. And he's grasping at what he can control, to feel safe again. He's never felt safe since his world turned upside down, it seems. And of course he is dramatic, if he can't turn it into a dramatic story, then it stops being a spectacle (and an act has a script, doesn't it? It's predictable, it feels safe) and starts being a string of events he can't make the sense out of it happening to him. His suffering has a meaning, doesn't it? It has to. Otherwise he can't comprehend it, and Julian spirals into anxious territory over what he can't comprehend. Of course. Of course the guilt eats us alive when we are convinced it's our responsibility to improve our lives but we can't do everything on our own anymore. Of course. Of course it didn't occur to him asking for help. He feels ashamed when it feels like life is telling him he isn't enough. It's what hurts the most. That he isn't enough and that he can't do anything about it. Reaching for help sometimes felt like face slamming into this wall of shame. The idea "I should at least be able to do this much before complaining". Then never giving ourselves grace to say, "ok, I'm being too hard on myself, I don't need to impose all these trials on myself before I trust I won't disappoint my loved one". Until we are both run ragged by our inner critic and a loved one comes along, stares at us and is like "why did you do this to yourself?" And we feel. So silly. Yeah
My love has concrete feet
My love's an iron ball

If you want me to draw something similar my commissions are open!
Got a few of my friends to go to a linocut workshop with me because it's been a while and I wanted to have a (late) bday hangout. Everyone had a blast with it I think, yay arts & crafts OwOb
Going to be a few days until I can actually show the print (had to leave them at the workshop place to dry and I can only pick them up on Thursday) but here's a sneak peek at my printing lino sheet
I really want to get myself a linocut kit at some point because it's such a satisfying medium. Slow, physical, both requiring care and precision yet is somewhat unpredictable. The only trouble is that it's a bit of an investment with all the tools required, and the storage space because I have,, a tad too many arts & crafts supplies. The curse of cycling through different hobbies.

its also really really funny to me when i point out Valdemar is said to have absolutely no interest in sex or romance and then people get butthurt and block me and vaguepost about it. like oh no I'm literally right. how hurtful it must be for me to. state facts
