Recently, a Facebook group was made for my 10 year high school reunion. (I may have freaked out that it's been 10 years.) So people are posting in the group about things and stuff, but a reoccurring theme is "I wish we could go back!" Don't get me wrong, school was pretty good for the most part, but I wouldn't particularly wish to go back. I've pinned this down to the fact that the majority of them have multiple kids, and have done for quite a few years. I mean, we're 25/26. I'm all for people having kids whenever they please, but come on. Use protection and live your life a little first. A lot of them sit on Facebook whining and complaint about their significant others, or lack thereof. They're angry at the world for issues that they could have 100% avoided. I liked school. I didn't have too terrible of an experience, it was good. So it's not as if my opinion is based on a shitty time of being bullied and all that jazz. I had a decent experience, but I wouldn't go back. I wouldn't go back because I've lived my life since I left. I've traveled extensively throughout Europe, I worked at a camp in the U.S. for two summers. I've been to the continent of Africa, I've worked in the music industry and toured with a band I loved in high school, I have friends from dozens of different countries, and I've lived in the U.S. for two straight years. I realize that comes off as braggy, but it was not intended in that sense. I mean it in a sense of showing what I've experienced since leaving high school. I've had experiences of a lifetime. I actually sometimes think "I haven't done much with my life." But then somebody will say they wish they are back in high school, and I realize that I've been to the top of the Empire State Building, and I've canoed at 6am across a lake in Maine. That I've swam in the Mediterranean Sea, hiked a section of the Appalachian Trail, and sailed a boat in the Chesapeake Bay. Sometimes I need that little reminder to remind myself of the things I've done and the places I've seen. But mostly I just feel sorry for those who long for their high school days. Yes, they were great, but you should give your life more meaning if you're yearning for "the good old days". It's fine to reminisce, but when you say with 100% seriousness that you want to go back for them, it's a little sad. You are in control of your own life, and you should live it to its fullest potential.
