Thomas Knox has been hitting up train platforms across the city with a table, two chairs, a simple vase of flowers and, occasionally, a game of Connect Four. Then, he waits for idling commuters to take a seat and, well, get to know him a little better.Â
âI wanted to do something fun in the subway due to all the negative things that happen,â says Knox. âI wanted to make people smile and enjoy the commute. I feel each date has been successful in its own unique way. The general reaction has been positive and hopeful.â
HOW CUTE IS THIS
but isint it beautiful to be in a romantic relationship with someone who constantly supports you and is always by your side experiencing the amazing things of life and holding you during the awful times? how could you not want that?
I have that with myself and itâs even more beautiful
Oh yeah, have you heard about Alyssa Cole's novella Agnes Moor's Wild Knight? It's a medieval romance with a black woman protagonist based off King James IV's Tournament of the Wild Knight and the Black Lady. I thought it is somewhat relevant to what you're doing here? (IMO the romance/historical romance genre is pretty fucked up in terms of racial representationâminority/interracial romance is still segregated out of the mainstream basically.)
Iâd heard of it, but I havenât read it yet. The reviews are pretty glowing, especially for a novella under 50 pages. The original tournament in King James IVâs court was for Ellen Moore, and the âWild Knightâ was in fact King James himself. Ellen wasnât the only Black person present at his court, or even the only Black woman. There were musicians, artists, servants, and attendants who received wages and gifts from the treasury, which is part of how we know about them. You can read historical documents that record their presence here at The National Archives.

I'm still loving your blog! My 4-year-old demands to see your blog a few times a week, since she's really into art. Anyway, do you think part of the success of Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire is at all attributable to the fact that as a fantasy world, it's still more realistic than some period movies in showing people of different races? I know it's not perfect, there are still a lot of white people, but it's better than a lot of what's out there in that regard.
Thanks! I hope youâre supervising, since European Medieval Art is often not even safe for work (NSFW), much less preschool. :P <3
GoT/ASOIAF isnât ârealisticâ. If you want a rundown of why, I have a whole series of articles Iâve written and discussion Iâve had. I speak as someone who knows a bit about these topics and has also read the book series several times and seen every episode of the show, starting with âThings Were Just Like That Back Then: Thoughts on Westeros, Sociology, and Historical Accuracy in A Song of Ice and Fireâ
TL;DR: Got/ASOIAF sucks at representation and itâs a fair example of how the genre I love does not love me back. :/

what she says: iâm fine.
what she means: how dare the Harry Potter movies misrepresent both Ron and Ginny Weasleyâs characters so badly. Book!Ron is such a support to Harry and an indispensable character who is chronically under-appreciated but consistently rises to the occasion to help his best friends defeat the most evil wizard to wield power since Grindelwald. Movie!Ron is relegated to cheap humor and annoying side plots with a totally out-of-nowhere romance with Hermione. Book!Ron and Hermione have a strong relationship built on years of trust and mutual attraction, but the movie just throws it at you expecting you to understand the completely underrepresented buildup. Book!Ginny is a boss bitch: she kills at Quidditch and understands Harryâs pain and anger at having Voldemort in his brain because she LITeraLLY was possessed by Voldemort herself and she is really the only one who could empathize with what he goes through. Sure, she has a crush on him, but she isnât an awkward little mute with no personality apart from adoring Harry from afar. She is feisty and smart and a powerful witch, but the movies mostly just show her pining after him and donât show how she lives her own life. How dare they do that to her. Oh and donât get me started on how the movie had HER ASKING WHO VIKTOR freakINFGSD KRUM IS??! SHE KNOWS who he his, sheâs a giant Quidditch nerd. Who do yOU think youâre fooling
When i was a kid my mom and i had a code word to let her know when i needed her to say no. For instance if a kid at school asked me to come over and stay the night but i really didnt want to, id call my mama and ask her, and then end it with âplease, Mom?â I never call my mama Mom, just Mama or Moomoo, so she would know immediately to say that I was grounded or had too much homework or some other bullshit. We also had a system the other way around, so if i called her to see how her date was going and she needed an out, she would call me babydoll and id tell her i heard scary noises and was frightened and needed her to come home or something. Anyways, my point is that every family should hqve a system of codes to keep them safe. Go do that.
Dude. Family life on point.
Transracial/transethnic are my new favorite to hate
And if youâre transgender or a POC, then I hope youâre pissed about this too. I am appalled that this kind of community had been allowed to grow on tumblr and has felt very little backlash thus far. They are horribly misguided individuals and we shouldnât allow this continue, plain and simple.

There is no such fucking thing as transracial. As a chinese girl, I have always envied traditionally European traits, because media ingrained the idea of blue eyes, blonde hair, and the like, into my mind as the only way to be considered beautiful. I was made fun of for my âsquintyâ eyes. And while Iâm not black and therefore donât understand the same issues that they face, you cannot claim yourself as transracial. Born as a white person, you cannot abuse your white privilege and masquerade as a black person. There are people dying in the streets being shot in the back, while you firmly believe âI was born the wrong color.â âBlackâ comes in various shade. Michael Jackson did not undergo bleaching, it was confirmed that he had a skin condition. So donât you dare put Michael Jackson forward as your idol, or Rachel. With your privilege, you have been able to pick and choose racial symbols, or even parts of a race, and then suit it to your needs. The bindis at Coachella, rap was stolen from black culture, dressing as a geisha because âits a good costumeâ, etc. NONE OF THIS IS ACCEPTABLE. While you made fun of us for our hair, or our way of talking, or our eyes, you chose the âprettyâ or âinterestingâ concepts from cultures and threw it all together as your costume. As your masquerade. And thatâs not okay. So shut the fuck up, transracial isnât a thing. And yes Iâm mad. Iâm infuriated because people like me, have struggled with racism against them for as long as they can remember, it is offensive for you to dare say you are transracial when you made fun of me for my âasianâ characteristics years ago. Get off your high horse and grow the fuck up. Youâre not a hero. Youâre contributing to the oppression.
Transracial Lives Do Actually Matter..
I am a Black woman, and I identify as transracial. Like for real transracial, no joke. I was adopted from birth by a white woman, and have struggled with my transracial identity my entire life (still do). I am absolutely mortified that right now my identity has been stolen and co-opted by the likes of Rachel Dolezal, and further infuriated that now because this silly woman is claiming it for herself that people are mocking it and claiming it âisnât realâ. My identity is being erased, my pain made to be a joke. My experience as a Black woman growing up in almost total whiteness is being discredited. Please understand, transracial is not an identity I simply picked for myself. Transracial is the identity forced upon me by other people against my consent.Â
A transracial identity is what happens, when white people get their hands on children of colour, but have little to no cultural awareness of their childâs culture of origin. What results is a child of colour being raised as âwhiteâ. I have a very white name, and âtalk like a white girlâ. White people are usually very comfortable around me as having been raised around them I am very much aware of their cultural nuances.Â
Now all that being said, my ass is still BLACK. My first memories of dealing with racism started very young (around 2 or 3 years of age). By age 8, I was able to process what was going on (micro and macro aggressions galore) and began speaking out against the racism I was experiencing. I used my intimate knowledge and relationship to white culture to call it the fuck out. Now despite having dealt with racism my entire life, as I got older I began to realize that there were many Black people who felt that because I had been adopted into whiteness that I wasnât really Black, that I must be âwhite-washedâ. My experience as a Black person was devalued as not really knowing what it was like to be Black, by Black people because of my association to whiteness.. something I might add I had no control over, and absolutely no say in.
On the other hand white people, knowing of my adopted status would quickly assume that I was one of them. But the cost of being âone of themâ mentally while visibly being the âotherâ meant internalizing their racist bullshit and well, racism is bullshit and why the fuck would anyone choose to hate themselves just to belong? (I once got into a fight with a white co-worker who was absolutely appalled when I disagreed with him that Black males were inherently less intelligent and that was why the high school dropout rate was so high for Black males, as opposed to the reality that the system is set up to fail Black children, both male and female).
So what I was left with was that I wasnât really Black due to a lack of present Black parents and family, but I could never ever ever really be white either. Identity is a struggle for all adoptees, but especially so for transracial adoptees.
I am a Black woman, but theyâre are Black people who will say that I donât really get what it is to be Black. Which I believe to be untrue, but I do have a certain amount of undeniable privilege which came with being raised in a white family. White people are more likely to listen to me. They are more likely to accept me over a Black person who wasnât transracially adopted. Sometimes I feel like an undercover agent when Iâm around white people because of their comfort level around me, they are very quick to reveal their racist selves. And you best believe I use that to my advantage in any way I can to level the playing field.
I have come to the conclusion, that at its worst, transracial adoption is faintly veiled modern indentured servitude. I struggled a lot to reclaim my Black identity and undo the conditioning I received as a child and make the best out of an incredibly shitty situation.
Anyone who has followed my blog for awhile knows that I donât do this. I donât post long winded essays about anything ever, for the most part I take shit in, reblog, and keep my mouth shut. Part of this is learned behaviour from growing up adopted and learning from a young age that one isnât supposed to talk about things which are âtabooâ. But this whole Rachel Dolezal scandal, and the transracial mockery fallout has really just broken my heart, because I have fought too hard and for too long to let some foolish white woman take away my identity. Understand one can not simply choose to be transracial, it is just a fact of their life. If I could I would trade my Black transracial identity for a regular Black identity any day of the week, because what a transracial identity means for a POC is loss. Loss of family, loss of culture, loss of land of origin, and the irritating expectation that adoptees are somehow forever to be âgratefulâ for being âsavedâ.Â
So to Rachel Dolezal, please shut the fuck up.
signed, an actual Black transracial woman.
