I mean there’s definitely a common component to both types of relationship. They both include a certain level of deep companionship and camaraderie. But romantic relationships, at least ideally, add even more on top of that.

There’s an element of physical attraction that plays into it. Sure, I can find friends like Skyler physically attractive (and I do, he’s pretty), but with Will it’s not just about that. Through the years, our repeated sexual encounters throughout the years have allowed us a certain level of intimacy when it comes to each other’s bodies. I’ve explored every last inch of him and I’ve acquainted myself with every last little sweet spot and blemish and asset and imperfection. I know every ticklish spot, every sensual spot, and every spot he feels self conscious about. That mutual vulnerability and trust creates an intimacy that you can’t really experience with anyone else. And it isn’t always sexual. We can spend an entire morning snuggles up to each other in bed in our underwear and not have it turn sexual. Instead, it’s a very soothing, relaxing, comfortable feeling. One that makes you feel safe and secure and at home.

And then there’s also the familial aspect. This isn’t just someone I want to spend time with. This is someone I want to grow old with, and start a family with, and make a home with. This is going to be the person upon whom I’m going to rely the most for the rest of my life. No matter what happens in life, no matter who else I meet or interact with, he’s going to be there as much as he can to support me and vice versa. I can rely on him because he’s proven to be trustworthy in the past, and I know that having him around brings out the best in me.
