Omg are we starting Rika discourse in 2026?? Haha but I appreciate your message. I'm surprised at how much interaction this blog has been getting. (Barely any but I thought it'd be zero.) Anyway, I will answer this ask but I hope we keep things civil.
In short, I don't hate Rika. I think she's an interesting character but I don't have a lot of emotional attachment to her so unlocking her behind story was lower on my priority list. It's really just about saving up hourglasses.
But now I don't know... since Cheritz is increasing the prices, I've been debating just unlocking everything... Is it really worth holding on to the hourglasses on the very off chance that they release more routes? Plus there's probably a lot about the twins in her behind story and I am very emotionally invested in their story. Oooo what should I do? Do you think I should?

wait how are u getting so many chat rooms working at a place w no phone?
I have my phone in the lab office. I'm just not allowed to bring it into the lab itself. I have a smartwatch so it pings me when new chatrooms open and I just sneak away for a bit. It's been pretty doable with the causal story, but we'll see how deep story and another story goes.
"We will be raising the price of Hourglasses and other paid items by an average of 30% or more, effective July 24, 2026. In addition, some Hourglass costs for Deep Story, Another Story, DLC, Seasonal, and more will also increase."
Fucking Cheritz is really making the mission of this blog hard. I stand by it though! Play mystic messenger!! By the time you see this post, you'll have missed the free hourglasses from the game events, which would leave you pretty tight on resources.

How much I spent
In short, ~35 USD. This amount differs slightly depending on the conversion rate.
All 35 USD went towards calling cards. I bought V+Ray & Zen (while I as at it, since he was my fave) when Another Story first came out in 2017. About a month ago, I caved and bought the rest. This amount would've been cheaper by ~10 USD if I'd just gotten the bundles from the start.
What I was able to unlock with it
Essentially, everything except the seasonal chats.
I saved up enough HG from playing the game and maintenance compensations to unlock all available game content in 2016 (deep story, outgoing calls, after endings, & secret endings). I continued to have enough HG saved to unlock each new game content as it came out, except the outgoing calls for Another Story. I used the calling card for those.
I do not have Rika's behind story unlocked (420 HG), and I have not reset V's after ending (100 HG). I have enough to unlock both, but I'm just holding on to them in the very very minuscule chance that Cheritz releases more routes. I have 6 of the seasonal chats unlocked. I would not have enough HG to unlock them all (if I spend the 520 HG needed for Rika and V).
I have not purposely farmed HG, but I am frugal with my spending. I didn't use HG on missed chatrooms or loading save files, and I used a walkthrough (no longer accessible, try this one instead) to keep the outgoing calls to a minimum. For the first couple of months, we didn't have 707's spaceship, but we did have more maintenance compensation. I imagine it might be harder to save up HG now.
I'm going to keep track of my heart and HG count the next time I start a new route and report back on approximately how many HG you can gain per route.
What's Worth Spending Money On?
Hourglasses
Since I never spent money on hourglasses, I personally don't think it's worth it. The prices aren't cheap and it'll be even worse after the increase. I think it'd be more worth it to get...
The RFA VIP Package
Includes 1000 HG, calling cards for all original cast members (Zen + Yoosung + Jaehee + Jumin + 707), unlimited save slots, and a bunch of other cool stuff. There is a slight problem with how most people don't own a CD drive anymore, but it's still super worth it if you've gotten into mystic messenger but haven't bought anything yet. I don't have this so I guess I can't say for sure, but I can tell you that the calling cards are worth it and the unlimited save slots are super useful and expensive to unlock with HG!! A creator I follow did an unboxing back in the day here. Don't worry, the video is not as spoilery as he makes it sound.
The Special Believer Package
This one costs a bit more but gives you fewer hourglasses (800 HG, calling cards for V + Ray). Still comes with a bunch of cool stuff. I already have Another Story unlocked and bought the call cards but looking at everything it comes with still makes me tempted!
Calling Cards
I think it's worth it. It's pretty freeing to be able to call the characters without worrying about the cost. Even just from a pure cost-value perspective, voice actors were probably one of the biggest costs of the game. It's especially worth it if you play Another Story. The calls are more expensive and Ray is voiced by a very famous voice actor in Korea. If you at all suspect that you might want the calling card for more than one of the original cast, get the bundle. It's more cost effective.
Max Speed Button
It's not expensive and very useful so I think its worth it, especially if your life is really busy. I personally haven't bought it because I tend to fall into using it even when I don't need it. I like being forced to actually play the game... but man, it would be so convenient to have.
Other Merch
Completely up to you. Here's the Cheritz store. I only have the Zen pillow (bought for me by a friend) and the quality is good, but that's just my singular experience. They only take PayPal though, juts fyi.
What's Worth Spending Hourglasses On?
Everyone has different tastes and opinions so I will focus on telling you about the contents of the game.
Tier 1: Main Plot
Deep Story - The routes of two major characters and the bulk of the main plot is here. 707 is considered end game, so you need this to "beat the game."
Tier 1.5: B Plot
Another Story - The routes of two major characters, long intense chats, but set in a different time period/timeline. You could just never play this and only know the RFA's side of the story. Could make or break V, Unknown, or Rika, depending on how you interpret these characters. Calls and missed chatrooms cost more.
Tier 2: Gameplay
Ray After Ending - Timed chatrooms + VNs for 4 full days. Long intense chats. Lots of endings and CGs. Calls and missed chatrooms cost more. Epilogue of Ray's good end. It really made me hate V though, just a heads up.
Christmas DLC - Timed chatrooms + VNs for 2 full days. A few different endings. Some CGs. Some people use this DLC to farm HGs. A side story that happens on Christmas Eve & Day.
April Fools DLC - Timed chatrooms + VNs for 1 full day. 3 endings. Some CGs. Zen-centric. About April Fool's and Zen's birthday. I love this DLC. It's not that expensive, easy to play (less of a commitment), focused on my fave character, and the ending fucked me up. Recommended for all Zen fans.
Tier 3: Choices
V After Ending - Visual novels and chats with several choices, but not timed. 2 endings (but HG needed to reset in order to obtain the other ending). Lots of CGs and just content in general. Epilogue of V's good end.
Bad Jumin & After - Visual novels with choices. 2 endings. Some CGs. Story after Jumin's bad end.
Valentine's Day DLC - Visual novels with choices but only 707 has multiple endings. A couple of CGs per character. Story after the good end of each of the original cast members (Zen, Yoosung, Jaehee, Jumin, 707).
Tier 4: Reading/Watching
Rika Behind Story - Visual novels. Lots of CGs. About Rika's past. (I haven't played this so take my assessment with a grain of salt.)
After Endings (Not including V and Ray as they have special ones mentioned above) - Visual novels. Short. One or more CGs per character. Epilogue of each character's good end. You could just read about it but unlocking it gives me more closure. However! 707's is incomplete because you will need...
Secret 1 & 2 - Visual novels. 7 episodes each. Lots of CGs. Completes 707's good end epilogue. Reveals all secrets.
Tier 5: Chats
Seasonal - A series of chats. No choices. No voice acting. 1 CG per season that might not be able to be viewed properly (at least for me, idk if it's a bug or what).
Other: Save Slots
It's useful but pretty expensive. I'm making do with just the five. If you're just focused on speed running all the endings then it's worth getting a couple more.
Ways to Get Hourglasses
A couple of ways that were common back in the day are described here and here. Though, I've heard talk that they don't work anymore. I've never tried them out myself. I don't know if it warrants being banned but I'm not willing to take any risks.
Complimenting Zen gives you a good chance of getting hourglasses. (Maybe that's why I was able to save up so many since I love Zen and play his route all the time.)
Birthdays (+game anniversary) are also a safe way to get hourglasses.

This year, Mystic Messenger celebrates its 10th anniversary. Mystic Messenger would not be what it is today without your unwavering support over the past 10 years.
Since Mystic Messenger launched on July 9, 2016, we have never once raised the price of Hourglasses or other in-game items. We kept our original launch price for 10 years so that as many coordinators as possible could enjoy Mystic Messenger without financial burden.
However, as prices and operating costs have steadily risen over the past 10 years, we've reached a point where maintaining the original price no longer allows for stable operation.
To continue operating Mystic Messenger sustainably and remain by your side for years to come, we will be raising the price of Hourglasses and other paid items by an average of 30% or more, effective July 24, 2026. is a bit of a commitment but it's not as crazy as it seems. I sleep a full 7 hours per night while working 10 hours per day in a lab that doesn't allow phones, and I still manage 80-90% chatroom participation each day without having to go out of my way. Do not destroy your sleep schedule over this game!! I want to dispel the idea that you can't sleep while playing Mystic Messenger. You don't need to participate in all the chatrooms to get the good end.
This is as Korean game that came out in 2016
so keep the cultural context in mind (as you should with all media you consume). There might be certain ideas that you don't agree with (I'm not thriiillled about several of the endings) but don't get too fixated on them. They reflect more on where the society was at the time this game was made rather than on the specific creators and/or characters of the game.
Trigger warning for disturbing/upsetting content
especially in the Deep Story and Another Story. It contains inaccurate dramatized depictions of mental illness. Also, Jumin might get a liiiiittle possessive attached to you in his route. Just remember my previous point.
If you really care about spoilers
and have bad FOMO when it comes to games then do follow the suggested play order (Zen -> Yoosung -> Jaehee -> Jumin -> 707 -> V -> Ray). I know some characters are less appealing than others but you might just get won over. I did not like Zen at all when I first started but... here we are. (Seriously don't sleep on Zen. He actually loves you not just as the MC but as the player. You'll see. And the April Fools DLC is really worth playing if Zen is your fave.)
HG use.
Prioritize unlocking Deep Story and Another Story if you haven't already. The game gives out HGs for maintenance and events (though I don't think that happens very frequently anymore). From 2016 to 2020, I've unlocked all Stories, DLCs (excluding Rika's just because I wasn't interested), after endings, and secret endings, and I've never purchased a single HG for this game. Admittedly, I don't usually use HGs on missed chatrooms and save/load, and I usually follow a walkthrough to minimize the number of outgoing calls I make.
Collecting all the endings
is fastest if you save during game branches, but I personally find it a little overwhelming and immersion breaking. Plus, you only get 5 free save slots and it costs 5 HG to load a game. So I tend to just play the normal & good endings first (these are easy to do together) and then reset the route for the other ends.
Which endings are worth it?
That's really up to the preference of the player, but if you're a collector, bad story ending 3 tends to give you a new CG. Prologue bad ends are very easy to get (and I love the character that you interact with so yessss take me to paradiiiiisssse). Common route bad ends and bad relationship ends are also easy because they just require you to not participate in the chatrooms. It's perfect for if you still want the characters to be with you but don't actually have time to play.
