South facade of Church of Saint Simeon, 5th century CE, Syria. Saint Simeon, born in 390 in the Amanus Mountains, became an extreme ascetic monk whose practices were considered too severe for communal monastic life. Seeking solitude, he lived as a hermit, but his reputation drew many followers. To avoid crowds, he took up residence on top of a pillar, eventually raised to 18 meters, where he preached daily and communicated with the outside world by ladder. His fame reached emperors, who sought his counsel. He died in 459 at around 69 years old, and his remains were taken to Antioch, where his tomb became a major pilgrimage site.
After his death, a vast monastic complex was built around his pillar, centered on a large church with four basilicas and a domed octagon. The site flourished as a place of pilgrimage but later declined: it fell to Miaphysites in 638 and was destroyed in 985. Over time, the structure became part of the “Dead Cities” of Syria, and only fragments of Simeon’s pillar survived into modern times.

Marino Marini and his Swiss-born wife Mercedes Pedrazzini (1913–2008), better known as Marina, took refuge between 1942 and 1945 in Tenero-Locarno, Switzerland, to escape the Allied bombing raids on Milan [stopping briefly in Merate and Blevio, on Lake Como]
There, one of the most important yet little studied periods of his career unfolded, marking a significant turn in his artistic, ideological, and sociopolitical identity...

“Marriage as a long conversation. - When marrying you should ask yourself this question: do you believe you are going to enjoy talking with this woman into your old age? Everything else in a marriage is transitory, but most of the time that you’re together will be devoted to conversation.”

Friedrich Nietzsche, Human, All too human (1878)
“ (Menschliches Allzumenschliches I: § 406, 1878)

dostoevsky's manuscripts
art by firdevsî tavîl (1487)
Be as you've always been (Lover, be good to me)
Be like the love that discovered the sin (Lover, be good to me)
That freed the first man and will do so again
And, lover, be good to me (Lover, be good to me)
Be that hopeful feeling when Eden was lost (Lover, be good to me)
It's been deaf to our laughter since the master was crossed (Lover, be good to me)
Which side of the wall really suffers that cost?
Oh, lover, be good to me
