Knight and Cloak of Night

Why is Wreg crying? This piece is embodiment of yearning and queer desire. It’s private and deeply vulnerable state to him– and yet it’s something beautiful to which he willingly drapes himself into. The green velvet cloak is embroidered with stars, sequin, and undressed knights. The Knights are either reaching for the stars, diving after them, or kissing each other while grasping for swords. Knight crossing their swords is a popular metaphor for homoeroticism, and a personal favourite of mine. I also like to represent knights as the target of desire as they are rather anonymous with their helmets and (sometimes) armour. When Wreg was still a knight, he often fell in love with fellow knights, even if his love was never returned – that did not stop him from spending many sleepless nights hoping and dreaming. The cloak of night as metaphor to me personally means something heavy and velvety, something that may be scary, but ultimately is a safe place to be oneself. The lace is the barrier between dream and reality. It’s adorned again with knights, but also with flowers and a stag. Spring is in full swing here when I drew this, and it works well as a theme of blooming and rebirth when paired with love and want. There is someone behind the lace, his hands can be seen peaking through it as he presses his fingers against it and tries to grasp for Wreg. Is it a dream that Wreg wishes to be true? Is it someone mutually desiring for him, wanting to tear down the veil between them?
