HELLO?

Nathan Sykes’ “Over and Over Again” may very well be one of my all time favorite songs. It’s simple and poignant without falling into a hole of cheesiness. Nathan has a rare voice - one that’s pure, beautiful, and able to evoke deep emotion without any additives. That being said, the re-issue of Over featuring Ariana Grande is completely unnecessary. Her voice took something very special about this song and killed it. I won’t argue that Ariana Grande is an immensely talented vocalist, but this song did not remotely need to be a duet. It had so much more meaning when it was one person telling their soulmate that he would love him/her always and forever. Turning it into a duet has made the song cheap. I’m so disappointed.

It started a year ago when Kesha Sebert filed a lawsuit against her former producer, Dr. Luke. She accused him of sexual assault, battery and sexual harassment. In the suit, Kesha claims Dr. Luke once drugged her with “sober pills” and raped her. He allegedly threatened to kill her dog and encouraged the development of an eating disorder Kesha was treated for in early 2014 by calling her “not pretty” and a “fat fucking refrigerator.”

Dr. Luke almost immediately countersued, claiming Kesha was orchestrating a public defamation campaign to try to get out of their contract. Since then, her career has been effectively frozen.

On Oct. 30, Kesha made her boldest play to try and break that contract so she could get back to releasing music. Her legal team filed in an injunction with an LA court. Dr. Luke and Sony are reportedly “confident this motion will be denied.“

Unfortunately, the strict contract Kesha signed as an eager high school dropout in 2005 is a lot more common than many would think.
