why this december should be the official itafushi anthem (an essay)
(contains spoilers for jjk, though theyāre either light or implied)
Only in my darkest moments can I see the light
I think Iām prone to getting blinded when its bright
Well, this December, Iāll remember
Want you to see it when I do
Ooh
God knows I do
Iām alright if youāre alright
And Iām okay if youāre okay
Itās this state, in this state Iām living in
Itās just a little bit
Itās just a little bit lonely in this home its always
Colder on your own
My darling I
I let the seasons change my mind
Only in my darkest moments
I wanna see you with your head wide open
Empty on the ground, gone without a sound
Just another white elm growing at the end of town
Well, this December, Iāll remember
Want you to see it when I do
Ooh
God knows I doĀ
given that my current itafushi brainrot is focused on the fanfic iām writing that also doubles as a songfic for this december, you could say iām attached to the idea that the two are connected. i think that the lyrics of the song really encapsulate the feelings the two have for each other. (apparently itās actually about seasonal depression or something? but this is kind of cooler)
iām alright if youāre alright / and iām okay if youāre okay
every time i hear this i can only think of the parting words that itadori and fushiguro always leave each other with: iāll kill you if you die. more accurately, i feel as if represents the feelings they have towards self-sacrifice and preventing the other from being in pain. for itadori and fushiguro, if the other can be saved, then itās okay. it doesnāt matter how much pain they have to go through as long as the other one is safe. always, always theyāre thinking of the other oneās feelings and how to avoid causing them what they view as unnecessary guilt and pain. this moment in chapter 63, i feel, perfectly exemplifies this dynamic:
both of them will always choose shouldering their burdens on their own and keeping secrets from the other over allowing the other to be hurt. it doesnāt matter, as long as the other is okay.Ā
only in my darkest moments can i see the light / i think iām prone to getting blinded when itās bright
this oneās easy. fushiguro is associated heavily with darkness and shadow, not just with his appearance and his abilities but also with his tendency to bottle up his emotions and hide his true feelings. he doesnāt share what heās going through with anyone, he doesnāt let his emotions show on his face or in what he says, heās the more introspective and passive of the two. on the contrary yuuji has lighter hair, acts more extroverted and open with his thoughts and feelings, doesnāt seem to think twice about his actions and tries to create active and positive change, and is shown to be undeniably a good person to the point where others remark it as strange that heās a jujutsu sorcerer. but itās not as simple as that.Ā
in this amazing analysis by @linkspooky, we can see that as time goes on, fushiguro and itadori integrate aspects of each other into themselves. fushiguro becomes more active and compassionate; itadori becomes more passive and ruthless. i think that the lyrics here could show the yin/yang aspect of itadori and fushiguroās relationship, showing how in the depths of darkness the true aspect of light is revealed ā and vice versa.Ā
itās just a little bit lonely in this home / itās always colder when youāre alone
itadori is the person that has come the closest to fushiguro. their relationship is one of mutual trust. after tsumiki was cursed, fushiguro closed himself off to avoid being hurt again, but we can see over the course of his development that he has accepted that itadori is just as important to him.Ā
heās not alone anymore.Ā
only in my darkest moments / i wanna see you with your head wide open / empty on the ground, gone without a sound / just another white elm growing at the end of town
in conclusion, itafushi brainrot
