And I think I've finally figured it out. I don't think I'm grieving the ending we got. Instead, I'm grieving the story we never got the chance to have. Because that final scene in Season 2 was never meant to be the end.

Crowley driving away, Aziraphale ascending back to heaven, the sad music playing over the credits... That unbearable feeling of "surely this can't be it".

It wasn't actually written as a tragedy, it was written as the middle of the story! The painful part the viewers had to go through before the healing.

Crowley had finally admitted what he wanted (he was pretty clear), Aziraphale loved him too but believed that going back to heaven was the only way to build a future for them (I truly believe Aziraphale thought Crowley and him being angels together and having a say in heaven was the best ending they could have). They wanted the same thing (being together) but were tragically moving in opposite directions.

Season 2 set up so incredibly much! Their reconciliation, their first real conversation after the kiss, Crowley learning that Aziraphale never rejected him (and would never in fact) but was trying to save them both instead (as misguided as Aziraphale might have been), Aziraphale learning that Crowley never had to be "fixed" ("turned back into an angel"), the Second Coming TM, the implications about the book of life...

All things that were CLEARLY building toward something bigger.

And THAT's why the ending still hurts! Because for me and my heart, those credits are still followed by the words "Yup, that's that. See you in Season 3~ :D To be continued lmao" but then real life intervened (talking about Geil Naiman) and suddenly the pain that was meant to be temporary became permanent.

So, I don't think I'm mourning Crowley and Aziraphale... They ARE together, in the end. Even if it's not the way we would've hope for.

I think I'm mourning the potential, the scenes we'll never see, the conversations that'll never happen. The season that existed somewhere between Terry Pratchett's and Neil Gaiman's ideas, in Michael Sheen's and David Tennant's performances, and in the hopes of literally everyone who poured their hearts into this story.

Not because what we got was terrible but because it could have been so so beautiful.
