He wasn’t born the Hound. He was made the Hound. He was a dreamer as a child, an innocent, who trusted his family and that trust and innocence was repaid with by terrible crimes.

Sandor was a small child, 6 or 7, when he was playing with his brother’s wooden knight and his brother (who was too old for such toys, nearly a man grown) punished him by pushing him into the fire. I think there are two very important parts to that statement: First, that Sandor was betrayed by his only brother, a “man” he looked up to, a man who was soon to be a knight. Second, he was playing with a toy knight at the time. He was looking up to a knight, likely imagining himself an anointed knight someday, when he was scarred by a knight. That’s so tragic to me.

Not only was he personally–literally–scarred by his childhood, he lost most of his family, ending up with only Gregor in the end, even when we meet him. His father, who took Gregor’s side when Sandor was burned, was killed in a “hunting accident,” likely by Gregor. We assume his mother died when he was young, and he had a younger sister who died when she was young. His childhood was not one of innocence for long.

He does not want to be the Hound. He hates King’s Landing and he hates feeling like a monster, but he became a monster when he felt he had no other choice of survival and lacked an identity. His childhood was stunted by trauma and he never fully matured in my opinion and is finding himself just as many younger adults would be. But he cannot escape this identity he has made when he sees his brother or a Lannister or looks in the mirror. He is treated like a dog, so he acts like one at times. He is temperamental and vicious and sad and frustrated. He is lost at times and turns to alcohol and his made-up identity to hide his true feelings.

I believe he is good at heart. He does not always show it and even tries to hide it, but he had many more opportunities to be horrible and he chose to be good. He protected Sansa in King’s Landing and Arya in their travels. He has some things mixed up in his head and lacks affection and a good upbringing, but if he chooses to be good, he could be. I think his story is all about who you were made and choosing to let yourself be what everyone thinks you are (even yourself) or rising above it. I think in the end he will rise above it.

Day 74: Doghouse. Pfffff…. I’m sorry if there’s too much stupid in this dump but… I really like drawing people as animals… ._. probably has to do with my lifetime enjoyment of Disney. So yeah… Sansa’s wolf happened to be named Lady and then… it worked so well! At least Arya is a wolf like she’s always wanted to be :V
