something about Mello referring to himself as Mihael Keehl in LABB. The rejection of the alias that defined him for so long. The honesty to both himself and the reader. He knows by that point that Kira had his name, so logically there isn’t much point in hiding it any more but that isn’t all there is attached to that alias. There’s also his identity of Mello, L’s successor, the one who fought for years to overcome his obstacles and become the next great genius detective to come from Wammy’s house. By calling himself Mihael he’s not only remembering who he was before that, it’s an act of humility, accepting defeat with grace and respect to his opponent, Near: he isn’t L’s successor Mello anymore, Near is the new L, he’s just Mihael, the boy who is going to sacrifice himself so that Kira can be stopped. It isn’t about his ego or victory, it’s doing the right thing and for once, taking the high road.

honestly one of my favourite things about near is that he is, imo, a fundamentally unhateful person — he forgives quickly and he accepts slights against him as non-malicious and therefore not worthy of anger. HOWEVER he absolutely despises light in particular and his passion throughout the series is batting him around in such a humiliating fashion that the task force suspects him more than they did when there was near-irrefutable proof of his crimes. it’s like all the anger he doesn’t have for everyone else is concentrated solely on this one single person. black hole density levels of hatred.
