Ohhh, I get it: the art of drawing and painting is the art of skillfully reducing your perceptions of a three-dimensional form to a cluster of shapes, lines, and colors that—in the representative tradition—build up as convincing an illusion as possible that the viewer of the artwork is seeing the object portrayed, or a “good likeness” of it. But the marks themselves are arbitrary, and the process of learning to make convincing ones is in part learning how not to see whatever is in front of you as a face, an apple, a cat, but instead to see funny-shaped areas of light and dark that, when committed to a flat surface, recreate the contours of the thing. It’s like literary translation in a way.

The expectation that you will refer to a trans person by their preferred pronouns and name is not them ‘forcing you to accept them’ it is basic respect. You don’t have to like trans people, you don’t have to ‘believe’ our identities or whatever. You do have an obligation to treat us like people, though. If you had a 40 something cis male coworker named Bill and you repeatedly, pointedly and aggressively called him ‘Shirley’ and exclusively used she/her pronouns to refer to him, that would be a major HR problem. It is not persecution to have to show basic human decency.

why do closed captions keep pretending english is the only intelligible language? when a character speaks spanish what exactly is forcing your hand to transcribe it as "[speaks foreign language]" rather than "Si"

Quick reminder that if you live in an EU Member State, those captions are not compliant with the European Accessibility Act and you can report the platform or company! EU folks please do this if you can; forcing multinational companies to comply with the EAA has a very good chance of making them simply standardize compliance, even in counties that don't have a version of this law.

I really can and will blame the 9-5 for everything. "We're in a loneliness epidemic" well, we have to spend a third of our day interacting with people in a professional way that makes forming real friendships difficult and then we're peopled out by the time we're done. "People are eating more and more unhealthily" people have to spend more than a third of their day doing work related tasks and they don't want to spend their tiny amount of free time making food. "People aren't involved in their local communities" after spending more than a third of their day doing work related things people are tired and also all those community events take place during normal working hours. "People need to get more hobbies" after spending more than a third of their day working, people are TIRED and don't want to do anything that takes yet more energy. "Literacy is dying" to maintain your critical thinking skills you need to read/watch things that make you think and after spending more than a third of your day doing work related stuff you are TIRED and don't want to expend even more brainnpower. "People need to get outside more" People. Are. TIRED. Because they have to spend all of their time working or preparing for work or recovering from work or doing all the chores they couldn't stay on top of because of work. I can blame fucking anything on having to work, it is truly the root of all fucking evil.
