I usually love Christmastime and I guess I still do. I love giving gifts and spending time with loved ones. But we had our annual cookie day yesterday and instead of feeling joy and happiness, I find myself instead feeling annoyed and a bit let down.
The past few years cookie day has felt rushed, and non-traditional. A result of Erinâs brain bleed, surgery, and seizures. A result of Royâs mixing politics and family and making things awkward and unpleasant. And Melissaâs birthday party always being the same day as cookie day, so me feeling torn and split but making every effort to fully participate in both.
But this year should have been different. Erinâs not had a seizure in a year now or so. Weâve learned to work around Roy and his drama. And Mel is in Hawaii. So no conflicts!
I show up at 9, the start time, despite the fact that I was up late the night before baking my gingerbread and didnât get enough sleep. A headache creeps in later in the day.
Rita, Gayle, and my mom were there and baking. So far so good.
Angie scheduled a photo shoot, which I get, sometimes youâve gotta do what you gotta do. She and Al came around noon or one. Al made the cookies while Angie edited photos and didnât participate in cookie day.
Erin said the day before that she might make peppermint bark. She and Tom show up around noon, but have work to do, so they didnât bother getting ingredients for peppermint bark. Tom works, Erin puts Hersheyâs kisses on Ritaâs peanut butter blossoms. But hangs out with Angie and Tom the rest of the time. So at least she âpatricipatedâ if you can really call it that.
Alaina is MIA. She had her company party the night before and is apparently too hung over to do much of anything. She hadnât come home the night before and no one is really sure where sheâs at. She and Andy show up around 2 or 3 and sit on the couch. Andy naps, Alaina chats with her sisters and Tom.
Iâm not sure if this is just a phase or if they legit donât give a shit about traditions and if cookie day as weâve known it will die with our mothers. If I should just learn to get used to disappointment and accept it as it comes. Or if I should speak up and call them out.
To top it off, Erin spent Thanksgiving with Tom and his family in Hailey. And is also spending Christmas with them, but in LA. Alaina is spending Christmas Eve with Andyâs family. And it sounds like our usual Christmas morning with the Heuringâs might be postponed until they are able to spend it with Erin.
Despite me feeling like they are the closest thing to sisters that I will ever have, it is painfully obvious that they donât think of me that way.
I guess it might be time to start making my own traditions with my mom, Michael, and/or friends. Instead of feeling sad and let down, create my own happiness.
In love, we are made perfect.

âBut but girlfriend.â
- Michael Marvosh (7/25/18)
Michael has mentioned before that he doesnât really have a best friend. That he didnât really believe in them.
The other night I said âGood night best boyfriend.â And he responded with âGood night best girlfriend, best friend, really.â
I pointed out that I didnât think he believed in best friends. And he smiled and shrugged it off.
For whatever reason, that made me feel really happy and full.
12 Habits of a HAPPY RELATIONSHIP
 12. Settle disputes peacefullyÂ
* When you feel anger, avoid saying or yelling words you canât take back, instead have a planned agreement that you each will back away. 11. Spend quality time Together *Make time for each other. With busy schedules we often forget to relax and enjoy others. Two people can be right next to each other, yet miles apart. Ignoring someone, often hurts more than angry words! Carve out special time for just the two of you once a week. 10. Appreciate and Help each other Grow *Having an open appreciation for your significant other leads to a productive, fulfilling and peaceful union. Cheer for their victories. Celebrate their accomplishments, and encourage their goals and ambitions! Challenge them to be the best they can be. 9. Live with Integrity *Trust in each other and know you havenât been used or taken advantage of, it creates inner peace and security. Lies fester, but the truth heals or prevents trouble. Live daily with fairness, integrity and reliability. 8. Be Loyal and Devoted *True love and real friendship arenât about being inseparable. Love is about two people being true to each other even when they are separated. When it comes to relationships, remaining faithful is never an option, but a priority. Loyalty is everything. 7. Love and Respect each Other as Individuals *Our first and last love is self-love. Donât rely on your significant other, or anyone else, for your happiness and self worth. Only you can be responsible for that. If you canât love and respect yourself, no one else will be able to either. 6. Lend Support during the Good Times and Bad *Be there through the good, bad, happy, and sad times too. Trust that you can count on each other, and be available not only when itâs convenient, but when itâs needed most. 5. Understand: Every Relationship is Different *Donât compare your relationship to anyone elseâs, especially that random couple whose relationship seems perfect. Every couple makes their own love rules, love agreements, and love habits. Just focus on you two, and make your relationship the best it can be! 4. An Emphasis on Communication and Listening *No one is a mind-reader so your partner wonât be able to figure out how youâre feeling. Be specific and clear with yourself on what you want and make an effort to discover what your partnerâs needs are. 3. Turn Negatives into Positives *Problems in a relationship can be broken down into numbers. If youâre both honest with each other and within yourselves, logically look at the negatives and calmly list them. Work together as a team to tackle each negative, one by one. 2. Work on Thoughtfulness Every Day *People who are in successful relationships nourish their partnerships regularly. They donât set their life on cruise control. Ask yourself, âWhat can I do today to make my partnerâs life better?â Little bits of effort every day will accumulate over time and make a big difference. 1. Realistic Expectations *Real relationships arenât what you see in the movies. They happen because each person values the other and are willing to make an investment of time into the partnership. They understand, not all days are passionate and romantic.. rough spots will require good communication.
What in the everloving fuck is wrong with our government? This isnât even a democracy anymore.Â
We need to be broken in order to find out how we want to put ourselves back together.

What ever happened to kindness and common decency? Welcome to the age of Trump...
Right, I have super powers on my side.
Michael, as he rolled over in the middle of the night.Â
why not both?
I believe Iâve talked about my reoccurring fish dreams before. I randomly Googled âsaving fish dreams meaningâ and this came up:
Dream Interpretation #2: Saving the Fishies One At A Time
The dreams described in this post are nearly identical to the ones I have on a regular basis.Â
Forgotten fish tanks that are filthy and have low water levels. I canât imagine how the fish have survived. I immediately tend to them. Clean the tanks, fill the water, feed them.
Broken fish tanks with water rushing out. Fish flopping all over the floor. Iâm grabbing glasses, bowls, Tupperware, anything I can to fill with water and put the fish in.
Aggressive fish and docile fish have somehow been mixed. The aggressive fish are attacking the docile ones and killing some of them. I work as quick as I can to separate the fish to save the peaceful ones. But each day they are mixed up again.
And lastly I only recall having the fish/eel/snake dream once. In my dream it was one of the fish in a forgotten tank. I attempt to clean the tank and add water, but anytime I get close enough, the fish lashes out at me with itâs tail and attempts to strike me.Â
I donât know how I feel about the dream interpretation.Â
I was raised religious and Iâve not exactly turned away from God, but I also donât regularly read the Bible and definitely havenât been to church in a few years. Iâve never felt the desire to preach to people about my faith. I am not sure that I even consider myself a Christian, but I do believe in some sort of loving God who watches out for me. I do find it incredibly odd that this woman (and many others based on the comments!) have the exact same dreams as I do. I wonder if there is some sort of scientific explanation as to why we dream the things that we do. If we all share some common experience or personality trait. I would be really interested to have the dreams interpreted from a non religious view.Â
I wonder if having dated younger and more often better prepares someone for future relationships? Or more likely that it hinders you from growing into the person you are supposed to be. Instead of focusing on you and discovering things about yourself, you are dedicating your time and energy to this other person. Someone who eats up all of your doting and attention. And for what? A broken heart a few months or years down the road? I am usually skeptical of those people who marry the first person they fall in love with. They donât know how to make a relationship work. But maybe instead they learn together. And more importantly, theyâve not learned to leave when things get bad.Â
On the flip side...theyâve not learned to compromise. Not on that deep of a level. Sure friendship and family commitments take compromise, but not like a romantic relationship. Who knows?Â

I feel like this set of photos accurately captures our relationship. (And my lack of height...)
I imagine living with children is very similar to living with a messy roommate. I cleaned before I left, but for what? What was the point? Why do I bother? This is why we can't have nice things.
