Yesterday was an unusually warm day for early March—even the ants seemed to think so. Here, two Red Wood Ants/röd skogsmyra are inspecting the area near their nest. With snow expected in the coming days, I don’t expect to see them again for a while. Värmland, Sweden (March 9, 2025).

🐜....this necklace was inspired by the painter Dalí, who used ants to represent decay and destruction in his art work.

when I flipped their rock, this ant grabbed the nearest aphid and ran it to safety. she’s another species of Lasius, this one in the subgenus Chthonolasius; I can’t tell if her colony’s aphids are different from the Cautolasius’ though.
