Wheeler’s Fungus-farming Ant (Cyphomyrmex wheeleri)
My friend found a massgrave of beetles (I think Anoplotrupes stercorosus) in southern Sweden (it is currently the mid autumn) and we are very curious as to what this is. Any ideas?
the ants are balling
Yesterday was an unusually warm day for early March—even the ants seemed to think so. Here, two Red Wood Ants/röd skogsmyra are inspecting the area near their nest. With snow expected in the coming days, I don’t expect to see them again for a while. Värmland, Sweden (March 9, 2025).

decomposed ant necklace
.

🐜....this necklace was inspired by the painter Dalí, who used ants to represent decay and destruction in his art work.

Speculative fanart by Potion Seller on YouTube, of the ants forcing two spiders to fight to the death in an arena!

Ya girl has been published 👀👀
My gynandromorph amazon ant find and photoshoot is featured in the fall edition of the American Entomologist journal! Just a perfect bizarre creature ❤️🖤
(Polyergus longicornis, male alate/female worker split)
When I found this creature in 2022, I would have been far more comfortable starting this post with "ya boy"
Another reason this creature is and probably always will remain my favorite find.
Happy Intersex Awareness Day. ♥️
ants were farming other animals long before humans figured it out! here is a Cautolasius herdswoman with her livestock
many subterranean Lasius species cultivate flocks of plump root aphids, guarding them against predators and moving them to safe locations and fresh pastures. they “milk” the aphids for honeydew, a sugary waste product of the aphids’ digestion. I’ve read the ants will only kill and eat their livestock in times of famine.
when I flipped their rock, this ant grabbed the nearest aphid and ran it to safety. she’s another species of Lasius, this one in the subgenus Chthonolasius; I can’t tell if her colony’s aphids are different from the Cautolasius’ though.
