Americans invented tbe worlds burgled and burglars to apply to robberies because the concept of losing their burger is the scariest thing to them
Follow me for more wikipedia ^
This is shockingly close to the truth.
Both come from the Latin "burgus", meaning castle or fortified town. A burglar being someone who bypassed the security of fortifications.
Meanwhile burger comes via Hamburg, the burg of Hamma.
So burgers are named after fortifications, and burglars are the ones who bypass them.
The Hamburglar is a reunion of terms

I think this picture of my gf helping fix my car should be in the MoMa
earlier I was coming back up from skating and one of the starstruck little kids from across the hall asked me, “how are you allowed to drive on the inside?” (referring to the fact that I carefully skate in the hallway and elevator, because swapping shoes on and off for the one-block commute to and from the park is a massive pain in the ass), and I swear to god the dialogue options that flashed up on my heads-up display were
[] Nothing in the lease explicitly says I can’t, and all uncodified rules are merely suggestions
[] I’m probably not, but the only people in this building who are fast enough to actually stop me are the maintenance guys who are all charmed by my kind green eyes and adorable dog
[x] I ate all my vegetables and did my homework so my mom said I’m allowed to do whatever I want
when swimming’s so easy you start doing bonus quests now
This is a superb example of why she's so dominant though. Besides the fact that she works her ass of to be, because she does. Economy of movement is a big damned deal in endurance sports. Ledecky is far and away the best distance swimmer in the world because of how precise her movement is. There is zero wasted motion and nothing shows that more clearly than this.
I can't get over how smooth her paddling is, there's barely a ripple when her hands enter the water

Cannot stand the trend of censoring any and all words that describe concepts that might make you go :( especially when the censoring is done in that quarter-assed way that's just 'did a lil scribble over a vowel so you know that I know this word describes a no-no."
I'm not even going to be vague about what sparked this. Do not fucking censor the word 'stole.' I'm at my fucking limit.
Who does this benefit. Who is made safer by this. Whose life is made better by this. Who is out there going "Wow I sure am glad I didn't have to see that word without it scribbled on a little. That really reduced the emotional impact of reading that word." Can I kill them?

I’m seeing a lot of people saying this post changed their brain chemistry, and as a neuroscientist I wanted to say yes!!! Yes it does!
Wanting something requires dopamine signaling, but liking something doesn’t.
If you have a mental illness/disorder that affects dopamine, you might feel that you don’t want to do the things that you like. You do still like them. You will appreciate having done them.
Let your likes guide you.
(If you want to read more, here’s one experimental paper about it. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5171207/ This theory called the incentive-sensitization theory was originally created to explain behaviors in addiction but can be applied elsewhere as well)
Rewards are both ‘liked’ and ‘wanted’, and those two words seem almost interchangeable. However, the brain circuitry that mediates the psych

Hot take but rigid divisions between queer identities and heavily-policed labels that are treated like diagnoses are really, really bad.
Trans men have shared histories with lesbians who have shared histories with bisexual women who have shared histories with ace people who have shared histories with aro people have shared histories with gay men who have shared histories with trans women who have shared histories with nonbinary people who have shared histories with etc etc etc etc etc.
Labels are important for people who want them, but we need to stop treating sexuality and gender as rigid boxes and checklists.
My latest cartoon for New Scientist
To be clear, this isn't a bit. This is what they actually did. "Its too late" is the new "Climate change isn't real"... And its still a lie!
Every serious climate scientist agrees that there is no such as thing as too late, just as there is no such thing as too early. We should have done a lot more than we have to fight climate change, and the world will suffer for our inaction, but there is no point of no return. We can always work to reduce the amount of suffering that occurs, and eventually turn things around to the point where our planet is healing once again. Do not believe anyone who says it's "too late".
This is literally what people are talking about when they say AI will be used to mainstream widely held bigotry. LLMs are trained on frequency and probability -> straight relationships are more well represented in the dataset -> straight pronouns and terms become the "correct" normal.
This is a form of backdoor bigotry from both normative facts (there are more straight than gay relationships) and well represented bigoted beliefs (men are superior to women).
Combine this with the mass of people inclined to believe (and being encouraged to believe) that if AI says and does something it must be correct

Can we talk about "third rate gossip rag"? What is this, 1942?
Man in quotation marks is a whole 'nother level of shit
stop posting about your badly behaved dog i mean husband online if you’re going to get upset with the people telling you he’s a bite risk. “look at what my husband packed me for my lunch” and it’s the most insulting low effort assortment of snacks you’ve ever seen accompanied with a note that says “i see you as subhuman”. “ugh guys stop telling me my husband doesn’t respect me you’re not the ones in the relationship you don’t know what he’s really like” yes i do and i think you should have him put down.
