Moody Barton
đ Something happened.
"Well, Iâm glad the Russian mob has some faith in my ability to survive. Thatâs very comforting." The one thing Clint had always been good at was surviving against all odds. Yeah heâd been dead once or twice but those were only for a while and he always came back. Always. Sometimes he thought he came back wrong. As though a part of him still clung to death and whenever he came back it was with part of him missing.
But that didnât matter, not anymore. If he was dead inside he still had to keep fighting, fighting was all he had left anymore. âSo, whatâs this guys deal? Is he really that good or more someone that uses a reputation to put the fear of God in his targets?â Heâd met more than a few people in his life that relied on a name and a look without actually doing much hurting.
Her comment about criminals or heroes having it easier made him life and fall in beside her. Smirking he softened his eyes when he looked at her. âTake it from someone that has been on both sides.â Pausing for a moment he let the memories of his die as a criminal wash over him before continuing.Â
He remembered how it felt, remembered how easy it was to take from people and pretend like he didnât care. âBeing a hero is a much worse. It means you have to love people and look after them.â
"Yeah, sounds like family. Can't say I'm good at that either." The Russians didn't think she was very good at loyalty anyways. Everyone wants to get ahead when they're young. Now, Penny simply wants to keep her head above water.
"Anyway. The Polish man has this whole story- it's long-Â strange. It's on my voicemail- never mind." This was going to sound totally foolish and full of shit. Maybe it all was.
"The mob saved this kid after'a war broke out. His family owned'a circus, and these rebels burned it down." The words spilled together as she was getting to the more flavorful parts of the story.
"Kazi the Clown. He talks to himself and his dead brother- supposedly. That kinda crazy."

đ Safe and Sound
"You sure werenât likeâ" Clint paused for a moment. Late night TV usually featured cowboy movies not the Food Network, but he was certain he had a name on the tip of his tongue. "Bobby Flay in another life?" He continued and raised an eyebrow. "Or, uh, Iron Chef? I oughta get rid of cable."
"Not Mormon, huh? Good. I was gettinâ worried there for a sec. Not wanting to walk down the aisle again anytime soon." Figuratively or not.
"Keystone Light?" He grimaced. "I mean I ainât quite got the beer gut yet. Ainât sittinâ on a recliner watching the football game." Â
Standing, he opened up the fridge and popped the lid off of two cold Heineken bottles. He handed one to her before taking his seat again.
"Letâs eat," he grinned and started to dig in.
Penny smiled briefly before bringing to eat. She did have some talents beyond getting in trouble. The quiet moment as they began to eat were a change of pass for her. A calm home- a quiet one- had never been a luxury. It was cheaper not to waste the money on somewhere fancy enough that the drama between your neighbors was blocked out. The thought came to her and she glanced to the painted fire brick lining the walls in this old building.
>>Why they want this place empty anyway?<<
The young red-head was by no means a master detective, but she did understand a certain way of looking at decision-making. Criminals were smarter with their money than many give credit for. While there is a lot wasted on booze, drugs, and apparel, they managed their discretionary funds to remain successful. Clint Barton seemed content spending his "riches" on old buildings in bad neighborhoods, classic -now beater- cars from strangers, saving a mook's dog, and hospital bills.
>>Should'a known he was no typical hoodrat. He can't spend money for shit. Bu' damn him he's sexy.<<
A grin emerged from her thoughts, so she took advantage of cutting the quiet with a tangent.
"So... is that worth a free night at Casa de Clint?"

đ Something happened.
"Itâs part of the job, yâknow? Going where people need me the most. And I was needed there, I did my job. Iâm good at my job." He hated going to that place, it made him feel insignificant, which was a feeling he got enough of just being a human on a team of superhumans, but that island made it feel like all the good he did was for nothing. The people he met though, the old men that helped him find his way around the city? They were the reason he would go back whenever they needed him too.
Rubbing his eyes he nodded, of course he hired some bat shit guy to take him down, because a normal killer for hire was just too easy. âFucking awesome, like I donât have enough shit to deal with.â Grabbing a beer from his fridge he held one up for her while taking a very long drink. If he was going to have to deal with this guy he might as well get drunk beforehand.
"Yeah, well, he ainât the only one trained to take down whatever mark they can find. Iâve been hitting targets since I was a kid." Clint was afraid of a lot of things. Of the blowback. Of who else was going to get hurt. Of who else was going to leave him. Of himself. Mostly himself. But he wasnât afraid of some hired thug that fancied himself a marksman.
At the mention of Natasha complimenting him he laughed darkly. âWell, Natâs known me a long time, guess we should probably take her word on that. Do you know what theyâre planning next?â
Penny took the offered beer with a half-smile and a soft, "Thank you." When she met him, she hoped he was simply a very attractive man with her next cash advance in hand. He could go about his life, and she hers. With all that has happened now, she hoped dearly he wasn't 'just some guy' because nothing short of some Liam Neeson movie action was going survive this.
Taking a drink, she repeated her mantra as she listened to his words.
>>It could be worse.<<
"What's after sendin' an assassin who thinks he's some sort'a demon of vengeance? I think all involved are watching this first. Not that e'ryone is confident he can kill you. But your neighbor dying was a clue- old school, ya' know.
"Everyone is payback. No one is safe." The words came out sing-songy, as if to emphasize the bore of old threats. Then she swallowed; realizing that sounded bleak.
"Typical day for you Avengers? I mean, I feel like both sides of the coin seem t' sleep with one eye open. Not sure if being a hero is more or less stressful than being a criminal."

Flashing her a smile, he then said, âMe? Iâm hardly the distraction. Youâre one to talk.â As he walked away to go sit down, he turned to look at her again. âAnd didnât ya say somethinâ about not beinâ easily distracted like me? Guess olâ Penny ainât too good for the Barton charm.â
Clint took a seat, fingers tapping restlessly against the table. His stomach grumbled for at least the third time. âSorry, I ainât got much else in the fridge âcept for beer.â
"Charm, ha." Penny shook her head while finishing the bruschetta. The spoon rose to her lips. Everything seemed to be seasoned just fine.
"You keep yappin' about gettin' naked." She grabbed the paper bag of toasted bread rounds and walked them over to the table to set down.
"It's hard not to prioritize that over food." He had the greatest shade of blue eyes she'd seen in a long time (and she'd seen a lot of faces). But she left their gaze to finally plate the tomato and basil mixture. She finished the beef medallions in the pan by topping each with the Parmesan and butter. Once melted, she transferred each to plates and drizzled the remaining sauteed onions and oil over top. She was no stranger to high-end eating in truth.
A calm shrug responded to the comment of beverage selection as Penny brought the food to the table.
"I'm not Mormon. I can drink." She sat down as she thought a moment.
"Unless it's shitty beer. I'd rather take my chances with city water than Keystone Light or somethin'."
đ Notoriously Bad
"I donât speak Russki, so you can cut that crap out right now." she said as she stepped up to walk around the red-head, sizing her up, as it were. Where is Brantley when you need him?
"The Old Man and his goons in the tracksuits. The ones you and yours allowed to put a hit out for Clint Barton. Only they didn't hire a professional; they hired a sociopath.
One with enough INTERPOL red flags to be the Fall Man for killing said Old Man."
"And without him, there are only 4 captains with enough men to hold his territory. Personally, I think it would be better business for a hostile take-over... and I'd like to help you."
