Alex, despite everything, doesn’t mind the errands his father sends him on. As much as he groans about it, he actually enjoys being in nature from time to time. So when he’s asked to deliver some produce to one of the restaurants in town while his father’s truck is in the shop, he doesn’t protest much.

It’s a couple miles at most, and it’s not like he has to be back at any specific time; maybe he could stay a while, grab a meal or a drink at the bar. His mind wanders as he starts his way down the road, his earbuds in and a crate of fresh fruit in his arms. His music is loud enough to block out any surrounding noise, but he knows if he sticks to the side of the road he’ll be fine—

He just about jumps out of his skin when a car horn overpowers that music by a long shot.

It’s the first thing either of them have said in a while. Dinner was quiet, with Matt eating while Alex sat across the table and scrolled on his phone. Now, they’re tidying up the kitchen together; Alex stops with his hands in mid-air on their way to put a clean dish away.

“…What?” His expression is one of genuine concern. Matt barely stifles a laugh.
