Scott Goldsmith’s Native Environment is a Horrible Murder Box
this has consequences
Vampires smp was originally billed as an amongus alike with light roleplay elements, so Scott Smajor basically just took a pile of life series conventions and built a character around it.
The life series, for the uninitiated, is a competitive minecraft youtube series where everyone has a limited number of lives (times they can die), and the goal is to be the last one standing. The mechanics gradually allow more murder to happen over time, so everything starts with people making nice with each other and ends with an absolute bloodbath. The tone is kept light by the mutual acknowledgment that everyone is a youtuber playing minecraft, but there has been plenty of discussion about how much actually living in that kind of world would suck.
And then we have Scott Goldsmith
Scott Goldsmith, who wasn’t intended to be much of a character in the first place, winds up playing the life series conventions to the hilt as genuine character traits and social standards. For the most part, this worked out incredibly well! Scott Goldsmith is an interesting character that works well with the rest of the cast and is fun to watch, which is basically everything you can ask for in an improv series. There are, however, some artifacts from this that have some big impacts on how Scott works.
Most notably, Scott Goldsmith works from the baseline assumption that he will have to crawl over the bodies of other people to survive, and that that’s just normal. It’s not even anyone’s fault. Everyone lives in a horrible murder box and the only way to succeed is to make sure that it’s you on top.
(this doesn’t stick out too badly because noble power games are frequently just a slightly more free range murder box, so Goldsmith being murderbox georg does not particularly contradict his lore or backstory)
The other major consequence of murder boxes being Scott Goldsmith’s main thing is that Scott actually follows a fairly rigid set of rules and assumptions when dealing with other people. His own personal vampire code, if you will.
The code of Scott Goldsmith is as follows:
1: The in group deserves everything and the outgroup deserves nothing. Everything the in group does is good and justified, everything the outgroup does is not.
This is the bedrock of the gaslight, gatekeep, goldsmith social interaction special, and the governing principal behind what Scott is willing to justify and when. Basically, if he or someone he likes did it, then he will defend it and deny even the concept that it might have been wrongdoing. People that are not members of his coven generally have their actions weighed by how dangerous or inconvenient they are to himself or His People.
The most obvious example of this is the interactions with v!Avid in episode 6 and 7. In episode 6, he complains about Avid burning down Shelby’s house, but in episode 7 he defends it by claiming that “it was ugly”. The same instance of the same action performed by the same person goes from something worth complaining about to something worth defending based entirely on where they stand in Scott’s regard.
Note also that this rule has no interest in fairness or reality. If Shelby says “the sky is green and the moon is made of cheese”, and Martyn says “no it's not”, then Scott will back up Shelby because Shelby is coven and Martyn is not. If Shelby kills Martyn, Scott will immediately decide that Martyn had it coming. If Shelby kills Martyn, burns down the town, and declares her desire to destroy the world and rule over the ashes with an iron fist, Scott will fully support her in that endeavor.
2: A lone vampire is a dead vampire. Your power is directly proportional to the number of people that answer to you
On one level, this is just mechanically true for vampires smp. Every person turned is another set of hands that can corrupt the beacons, and, just as importantly, one more person taken away from the effort to consecrate them. Even if that person never switches sides, the fact that they can’t consecrate any more or use the various human powers makes it a worthwhile effort, which is why there was a general OOC limit to turning only one human per episode. (and they had to take a break from turning people if they accidentally turned too many)
a more character driven level, Scott is very much a social threat, and acts the part. Turning people lets him acquire minions, who are easier to manage than outsiders, and generally aren’t going to cause him problems.
Vampirism is generally more then enough to force someone into his faction, because once someone is turned the humans will do the bulk of the work in driving the new vampire away from them and into Scott’s waiting arms. It’s a phenomena Scott is very confident about and takes shameless advantage of.
This is also why in episodes where Scott doesn’t turn anyone (due to the OOC limits), it’s styled as him stopping because the new vampires aren’t joining up- growing his power base is the main benefit of turning new vampires, and when that peters out he becomes more hesitant to do so.
3. Your actions should always advance your agenda
In other words, Scott mixes business and pleasure in the sense that his hobbies always contain some practical value.
This is, honestly, the one Scott haters get wrong the most. While there’s nothing wrong with having a villain in your story, Scott isn’t the sort of person to torture someone in his basement for the sake of it when he could be torturing someone in his basement for information, or to break them down into something more psychologically dependent on him.
Even if recreation is his main goal, he should ideally have a secondary goal as a matter of both practicality and preference- it’s just more fun for him if he’s being paid to be evil. (or buy some ice cream. Or pet a dog. Or help someone out)
4. Betrayal is a crime of the highest order. Loyalty is a virtue of the highest order.
What, exactly, Scott considers betrayal varies over the course of the series, but this is generally the governing principal behind the various times he menaced Pyro, why he didn’t see v!Avid’s murder coming, and why he was both so pleased with v!Avid and so angered by his death.
Scott Goldsmith values loyalty, and to a degree both expects it as his due and considers it an obligation to give loyalty in turn. This isn’t surprising- most Scott Smajor characters run along lines of loyalty and devotion. Scott Goldsmith is not an exception just because he is also a Dracula.
5. Support your allies however you can
Scott is, in fact, an incredibly dedicated ally. He does things like give Pyro food while having low hunger himself as early as episode 2, and the tendency to act like that only goes up over time.
This makes a certain amount of sense- helping other members of your faction also helps you because you’re all working together for a single goal. In Scott’s case this is especially true, since as the leader he’s deciding a disproportionate amount of the group’s goals. A well fed minion is a productive minion. A productive minion is a lot more likely to succeed at your goals.
This one is the part that can be the hardest to reconcile with Scott’s everything else. However, it’s important to remember that Scott is not immune to the desire for companionship, and also that he actually needs to keep people on side in order to not die. In some ways, this is very much an extension of rule 2.
6. (new) be a good friend
Over the course of the series, Scott gradually gets attached to the other vampires, and comes to see them as companions with needs he should consider outside of their mutual victory. He realizes that he likes the people around him, and he wants them to be happy. That he cares about them as people, and not just as tools.
The process of this takes the entire series, but by the end of it his friends are a big enough priority that he points out opportunities to escape to his own detriment.
In conclusion:
1. Scott’s core character concept is “guy that is trying to get a good grade in Minecraft Hunger Games, something that is normal to want and possible to achieve”
2. Scott Goldsmith does not so much have a moral compass as he has a set of rules designed to keep him alive. The bad parts of this are obvious, but there are good parts, too: when it mattered most, Scott was able to change and grow to suit the people around him. Owen and Ren, by contrast, violently self destructed and that hurt the people around them because they were too rigid in their personal convictions.
3. The support he offers to other people in the coven is real and sincerely meant. The expectation that those coven members will aid and abet his own misdeeds is also very real. Scott himself doesn’t recognize the difference until the end of the series, where he asks Abolish to stop him from doing bad things.
4. The finale of vampires smp from Scott’s pov very much pivots around v!Avid’s death. It turns out that the rules that Scott shaped himself around weren’t as ironclad as he thought, because the people around him would literally rather die than put up with them. The mechanics that demand violence and bloodshed can be subverted in a way that causes unnecessary death and suffering.
And, to be clear, Owen and Pyro are dead to him as soon as they do this. In part because he’s planning on killing them himself, yes, but also because their actions are tactical suicide.
When he next talks to Pyro in what is basically his eulogy, Scott thanks him for the reminder that he should expect death and misery, because as far as he’s concerned death and misery are the normal course of events. Scott was winning so much he forgot that murder boxes suck, actually.
This is increasingly a problem because, by the laws of murderboxes, Shelby and Drift are almost certainly going to die- they both struggle with pvp, don’t have the aggression to cover for it, and with Pyro and Owen lost they don’t have enough front liners to cover their weaknesses. If things continue the way they’re “supposed” to, more people that Scott cares about are going to die.
So, Scott starts looking for another way out. After all, if the rules can be broken in ways that are bad, maybe they can be broken in ways that are good. Maybe they don’t have to kill everyone. Maybe murderboxes are bullshit, and all of this was entirely unnecessary.
So he starts looking, and, surprisingly enough, there is a path out. It’s not easy or bloodless, but it is a strict improvement over the status quo. It’s an option that keeps his friends alive.
Of course, just leaving this murderbox isn’t enough. Scott still has to deconstruct the murderbox in his own head, because otherwise his actions will simply create another murderbox around him.
That’s a bad outcome, so he enlists Abolish to kill him if he starts causing problems. Scott’s not great with morals, but he’s excellent with rules and practical consequences. So long as backsliding into the worst of his old behavior is guaranteed to go badly for him, he can be fairly sure that he won’t do that.
Actually figuring out how to be a functional person outside of the torment nexus is basically an entire novella’s worth of character development that the series doesn’t have time for, so instead it settles on “they figured it out eventually”.

Drew vaguely affectionate vampires copperduo in the Dead Wood to cheer myself up and hopefully get into gear to finish more of the Vampires cast before Pantheon SMP starts.
Yes, V!Scott got a new fit, he's not going to only wear one thing in his wardrobe.
Also some wips I haven't posted here yet.
Scott Goldsmith Afterlife × Vampires Edition (I could yap about this one)
Shubbledrift playing billiards at Ren's pub (if things had taken a more peaceful and pragmatic turn)
And V!Scott can just pop bats out of his skin and whisper what they hear back to him, (particularly disobedient fledglings.)
"It is unfair and unhealthy to be entitled that YOU get to have spaces that are YOURS but you expect, without question, access and ownership of another person's spaces, mental health, safety, and wellbeing."
- From Legundo's post a little while ago.
Because of this unique proximity we share in MCYT space, it's a two-way street. I think being aware of that proximity and acting with that in mind is ideal. For all parties.
Unfortunately, ideals have a habit of also being unrealistic. Not because they're unreasonable, not at all, but because they're just barely unachievable.
The community is vast. Trying to control and prevent the actions of a lawless few ultimately harms everyone.
Since a lot of the community seems to be made up of younger folks, perhaps this metaphor will make some sense.
The teacher is so focused on coralling and supervising the class clowns that the atmosphere of the room has become tense.
Believe you me, nobody else's particularly happy with the class clowns either, but focusing on them isn't doing the teacher any favors. They're both wasting everyone's time.
What I find interesting about Legundo's statement (and why I quoted that part specifically) is that he's saying it from the perspective of a content creator (as he reiterates throughout the post, though it's not the point of it), and during this entire conversation, I've seen the exact same thing said by fans, over and over, only worded slightly differently. The only difference seems to be perspective.
This is me giving my thoughts on Pyro's recent boundary updates, so be warned. (Not anything on Maddy given I don't watch her or interact with her stuff, just Pyro)
✿ ————— ✿
Before I say absolutely anything else, I want to make it very clear that despite anything I say in this post, I will not under any circumstances be disrespecting the boundary Pyro has set. It's important to remember that although you have every right to be upset about something, that does not make it okay to be disrespectful or purposefully continue content that Pyro has stated he is not comfortable with.
✿ ————— ✿
To begin, and to be completely honest, I think Pyro was actually quite respectful and considerate about laying down his boundary change on shipping at least in his announcement in the discord. I have not watched his vod discussing it and likely do not intend to, so I may be wrong on that aspect, but I believe he was pretty considerate about all of this.
However, I also believe that the way he's gone about putting that boundary in place (asking the shipping content to entirely stop on all measures) is a very bad thing to do. Having the boundary isn't bad, it's how he's gone about it.
I'm not one to give criticism and not offer an alternative. In my opinion, a good way to go about avoiding shipping content of characters is blocked tags. Asking your community to put all shipping work under a specific tag and having that tag blocked is the best way to go about keeping your peace, and it still allows creativity among the fans whilst the creator can be comfortable. Plus, it's not like that hasn't been done before.
Also, I know it's been clarified as a joke, but I've so many posts and comments saying Pyro was going to send fans after repeated offenders to harrass them? Even if it was a joke, just saying something like that is... A choice. I also think that telling fans they cannot make shipping content of your characters whatsoever while still engaging in flirtatious behaviour is certainly not the best way to go about shipping content. It's kind of a do or don't situation, and the lines are currently quite blurred in my opinion.
✿ ————— ✿
Now, again, NONE OF THIS is to say I am going to disrespect the boundary Pyro has set. I just think he could've gone about it way better than he did.
Personally, I am going to be staying far away from any drama involving the boundary after this post, and despite already barely interacting in Pyro's community I'm personally probably going to interact even less. It doesn't feel like a safe space to me, and I just can't put myself through that for my own mental health's sake.
Hoping this all settles down soon, we get clearer lines in the boundary, and that nobody gets punished for misinterpretation. <3
Hi!! Since Pyro recently updated his boundaries to "no shipping" with you continue lumberjack cannibalism au?? /noneg just in case
I wrote 5k words and made a whole comic for the new chapter that I can't post anymore.
And I'm NOT complaining about the boundaries, it's an important thing to set for a cc and I'm glad they did so.
Pyro has said that he wanted ongoing works such as fics, that included shipping to stop updating completely if I remember correctly.
However, dni tags had been suggested for sites like tumblr in Pyro's stream, which got shot down because “A Blocked Tag? What, So I Can’t See it? The problem isn’t seeing it, it’s knowing that it’s happening.”
And there were statements which i felt off, one of Pyro's mods clarified it was meant as a joke on how the mods would ban those people from the chat/discord for engaging in any shipping fanworks, however that didn't feel great at the time.
I don't want to give up on this au, however the rules of this fandom seem blurry, a basic rule I thought was common knowledge was "don't like, don't read/engage", no matter what fandom, other cc's which have had issues with certain fanworks have seemed to go by this with their own dni tag.
If I can explain my feelings, 7 months of work since the end of vsmp feels like I am no longer allowed to touch anymore, there's not even an option to 'post it but tag it properly'. The project I spent so long on I'm expected to throw away unless I once again change the core plot. It feels unstable to spend any time making fandom works if half of them I look back on I can't feel proud of or redraw.
It's also unhealthy for cc's to engage so much in fandom spaces if they can't separate the characters that they made for a story to themselves. Fandom spaces, especially on tumblr, are created by the fans for fans, fanworks that aren't inherently shoved in the cc's faces.
And this isn't me complaining about them not wanting to see shipping content, just for all fanworks that have been ongoing to stop feels demotivating to continue drawing in a fandom where rules will change.
I think the fans have a right to draw the characters for the fans, not the ccs. Characters made for a story should remain separate to the ccs, because they simply aren't the same people.
I'm not attacking their boundaries but please clarify if I'm missing anything or just don't understand.
This isn't something I wanted to rush posting, I loved Pyro's content but I genuinely as a person, do not understand these rules.
So crau is currently on a hiatus until I get the courage to rewrite it yet a second time, I don't know if I even feel comfortable posting the last chapter I wrote, let alone the art with the state of this fandom right now.
Also I'm staying the fuck off of twitter for a bit.

Let's Talk: Fandom, Shipping, Responsible Internet Usage, and Communication
Hi! Recently, two creators in the MCYT CC space have expressed discomfort with shipping.
Fine, good. I don't mind that, especially if you're together and you put a bit too much of yourself into your characters for it to be comfortable. You have a right to have boundaries and dislike certain things people create using your characters.
Threats of harassment (no matter how jokingly made) are serious, however. It's intolerable, and I had thought we moved past that, as someone who survived the deep trenches of the DSMP era while a teenager.
Refusing to take accountability for your own internet experience is absolutely, IRREVOCABLY, on yourself. If you actively REFUSE to curate your internet experience, as a grown ADULT, maybe it's time to take a step back and think. This sort of mindset of "everything I dislike or feel uncomfortable with must be removed or never uploaded again" is EXACTLY what things like the COSA are targeting.
Unless you are interacting in FAN spaces, interacting with media YOU find uncomfortable, there is NO reason for it to be a regular problem that it has an extreme and negative impact on your psyche. I can fully support keeping it out of your chats or discords, etc. but you cannot complain someone else's house has weird shit in it when YOU walked in uninvited.
As for the genuine suddenness of this change, I'm not seeing ANYONE talk about it. Before, it had been "shipping of anything is fine so long as not overtly NSFW" to "no shipping full stop".
You've been together TWO years. Shipping for the characters (from a CC involved) peaked around ten months ago, during the VSMP era. WHY wait THAT long to express discomfort?? Maybe I'm missing something because I'm autistic, but isn't that something you'd have said AGES ago?? Why wait ten months or longer to say something, that's SUCH a long time, especially on the internet. Or, maybe, I'm just used to HAVING to advocate my needs and feelings.
TLDR; Setting boundaries (FOR YOURSELF) is fine and encouraged, curate your own internet experience like a responsible adult, threats (even made in jest) suck, communicate your needs better.
The reason the townsfolk had to put v!Scott to sleep instead of staking him is because he tore out his own heart and hid it where no one, not even him, would find it again.
-🔮
Oh! What a horrifying image! Wonderful! And this has so many implications on if Cleo HADN'T come up with that plan and Scott HAD gone through with just killing everyone, since he'd be unstoppable! Think about the implications! (If you get that reference I learned that from my partner who is much more into that than I am). Though I suppose Abolish would probably find a way to get at it like the madman he is
What will happen with your Scott and Pyro stuffs with Pyro's new boundaries?
In regards of the boundary change,
Any and all content I made for TF!Pyro and TF!Scott ( Including some vsmp content I might return to ) will be strictly platonic! I do enjoy each of their individual characters and dynamics and though I enjoy my own romantic view of them, I will not be continuing with that. This point is clear.
Many people have expressed their love , respect and understanding towards the CCs and the people involved which is wonderful, support the content creators! We all should respect their decision. All the people in the community I have seen and interact with has always been respectful and responsible, while the cc has stated that they are not to be blame I still want to remind some part of the fandom of that fact. And please don’t go attacking people. Someone expressing their feelings does not mean they are upset at the CCs decision.
I must admit that something could have been worded better, something that were said that had left a bitter taste in my mouth, but most of said thing is for me to discuss in private with someone I’m close. At the end of the day my only wish is for both the CCs and part of the community to not get attacked, Your focus should not be on attacking someone at all but to support and respect the people involved.
none of them deserved that. Please respect each other.
Here’s to hoping that nobody is rude to you for drawing majorscythe
(pls forgive if this is extremely messy LOL)
here’s to hoping as well :’-)) it has genuinely been a fear of mine ever since i started being more comfy drawing them romantically and that fear has just . never stopped . and i think especially on twt it was very apparent when i openly expressed shame for posting on main and making an alt to separate posts about them LOL .
i am very grateful that so far i’ve only seen a bunch of respect and support (i like to thank especially the people who reached out), i haven’t seen anybody celebrating which is great bc in this part of the mcyt fandom there’s definitely been a lot of important discussions, but some of the aftereffects have lead to unnecessary hate to mm shippers and the overall demonisation of mm ships/shippers .
when tf!majorscythe was gaining traction so many antis were already quickly trying to shut it down and call them brothers, on bannerfall flowersmith was also receiving the short end of the stick . this rising trend has made it extremely difficult to fully express my interests without feeling shame or fear and the recent boundary update might just be extra fuel to the fire (though i am extremely grateful that in pyro’s stream today he’s expressed his support - but again ,, the antis ,,,)
(i will be speaking abt this generally vvv)
additionally, as much as platonic relationships are important stories to be highlighted, it should never be used to demonise or shut down romantic ones . there’s is as much romantic potential as there is platonic when it comes to relationships as a whole, and to shut down discussions of either or only separates us as a community . to shut down romantic ships as platonic and to dismiss platonic pairings as romantic when there’s completely nothing wrong with it in the slightest as how the fandom interprets them or in regards to creator boundaries only does more harm than good .
there is also the discussion of how much the mcyt fandom treats this space as any other fandom space, when in truth so many facets should be approached differently/cannot be approached the same way due to the unique structure of mcyt content, in regards to content creators and their characters
circling back to the boundary updates today however, this is my statement that any of my content going forward regarding scott and pyro, or maddy & pyro with other characters, are strictly and explicitly platonic. all of my previous shipping posts will not be deleted but i request to not engage in it any further. for shipping pieces than can be interpreted as platonic please interpret them as such :’-)
im saying this as im still fully invested in tf!scott and tf!pyro + tf!pyro and tf!maddy as duos and will most definitely still create content with them in it, but i don’t want anyone to misinterpret it as shipping .

AND REMEMBER!!! CHECK ON YOUR FRIENDS!!! MAKE SURE THEY ARE DOING OK!!
This whole situation is awful but what makes us unique as a fandom is how well we work together- we CAN get through this if we stick together and have each other’s backs. My DMs are open, if someone doesn’t have anyone to turn to right now and needs to talk. Remember you are not alone and your fellow fans are right by your side <3
Also about the avid and marm situation, i know its tough rn but remember that we as a community, in vsmp, skyblock, the flight etc, did nothing wrong by loving their work, their characters, their stories.
No matter how many "i told you sos" youll see on twitter or anywhere else, please dont feel like you should've known better when the whole point of the shitstorm is that people got manipulated, intentionally. Youll see the sentiment of "dont idolise content creators" repeated, and it seems so obvious from the get go, but I know it often only hits once something of this severity happens in relation to a creator you love.
It hurts and it sucks and however you decide to react to it is your business and your business alone. Keep creating, keep loving, or take a break, focus on something else entirely, whatever you do, there is no correct or right way to deal with putting so much effort and care into stories of people who hurt others, not when theyre already off the cc sphere anyway.
I know i dont need to give my two cents on this, that it has all been said before, but just yknow. Support circle and a little empathy to my fellow mcyt fan compatriots bc yall are some of the most talented, passionate and creative people ive seen and its so easy to get lost in further discoursauce and let it get to you
So... In light of recent information, while my goal was to draw every VSMP character, I do not feel comfortable continuing with drawing Avids character.
While I am not on twitter, it of course made its way here and to tiktok, I've seen the statements and I cannot in good conscience support AvidMC even mildly.
I will likely continue with the rest of the cast, as I've put a lot of work, passion, and planning into it and would rather not allow the actions of a creator completely upend something that has brought myself and others so much joy.
So I will be scrapping those plans, end of.
And for anyone who has put a lot of work into any kind of artwork about AvidMC and Marma1ade and are now learning of the situation, feeling heartbroken as a result, like you wasted time, effort, and passion on it, that is sunk cost fallacy.
You couldn't have known. You will find something to put that passion towards again.
If you are feeling like cannot trust any creators and be a fan of anyone in the MCYT space, that is exactly what people who commit heinous things like that want.

Summary:
The crux of it is something small, the choice to leave and save himself or stay and offer protection to those too vulnerable to protect themselves. Scott knew that the choice would change him, no matter which he decided to do, that it meant everything for who he would become.
He chose to stay, and it meant everything and nothing. He chose to hold onto the pieces of him that remembered being human, being a protector.
He didn't know that it was more than just his future hanging in the balance.
*
Scott chooses to care back in the beginning, before he ever saw Oakhurst or met any of the people who would eventually be there. It makes all the difference but changes very little. At first.
