Ben Wade’s gang roved into town like a plague of the Biblical sort, working through the hotels, the bars, the stores and finally coming to rest in the saloon. They’ve been there three days, two nights all told.

Third night, Charlie is getting restless. Ben has no time for him. He wanders to the first bar, the only one they didn’t ransack, and sets up with a bottle of his own and all of his problems weighing on his narrow shoulders. He’s edgy about company, someone settling onto the barstool beside him.

But for now, however, he was simply haggard after a day of being out in the sun for so long. He was glad that the saloon he entered into had a semblance of coolness. It felt wonderful to unwind, to light his cigarillo, and to have a shot of rum set in front of him. Maybe now he’d finally get some well-deserved REST.

Except, maybe not. He didn’t love being told what to do, even if the other was obliged.
