So, I watched Teach You A Lesson yesterday and on the surface level I did enjoy it. I can understand the catharsis in having bullies being beaten up and victims be protected through the ERPB and the actors really did do a good job (all of them are insanely talented). I was cheering our MCs on when they were delivering everything the bullies did back to them.
Buuuut, in order to enjoy the show I had to suspend my discomfort because in absolutely no reality should any government backed institution (or ANY institution or person (be it student teacher parent or whoever)) should be provided full immunity for their actions ever. There's literally no way to hold them accountable for any abuse of power no matter how extreme. In a fictional world where we, as the viewer, know that our MCs are good and wouldn't hurt innocents we can suspend our disbelief and discomfort in order to enjoy the cathartic experience (esp for victims who have found themselves in and/or seen such situations) but irl this shit would NOT fly and I really wished the show made that extremely clear and not just brushed aside the very understandable and real concerns as only fearmongering by ppl who don't care abt bullying cuz it's just misleading.
As I think more about it, I can't help but see the kind of right wing, conservative coding in the show of how schools need to go back to the "good old days" when in reality there were no good old days, the abuse of power by students and teachers and parents and institutions against those more vulnerable is a tale as old as time because the system is always in favor of the more powerful. The education system does not need to go back to how it was, it needs to be build anew and I wish the show focused more on that.
