i’m happy you exist, that you’ve made it so far. it’s not an easy thing. waking up every morning and existing. i hope today you’re safe and that something makes you smile.
I feel like people don’t talk enough about the guilt, shame, and embarrassment that come with having mental disorders or experiencing low mental health. Constantly worrying that you’re secretly a horrible person or that you’re negatively impacting anyone who is close to you. Feeling selfish because you’re so stuck in your own head sometimes that you’re not doing enough to “earn” anyone’s company or care and that ultimately you must be a terrible friend because of that. Berating yourself for not just being better already. Believing that you don’t have a “good enough” reason to be feeling the way you do. Fighting constantly between wanting connection with others and wanting to hide yourself away to protect them and you. Having your rational mind on board while experiencing symptoms so you have to watch yourself not always acting rationally or healthily. The humiliation of being seen behaving in ways you normally wouldn’t behave when those symptoms are lesser or that low mood is higher. Just hoping people can see through to the core of you and allow some grace for your humanity.

What people think flashbacks are:
• Intrusive images/audio of your trauma that make you emotional and might cause you to forget your surroundings
What they really are:
• Intrusive images/audio of your trauma that MAY OR MAY NOT cause you to lose track of your surroundings
• Extreme unexplained emotions
• Fight-or-flight that won't shut off for hours, days, or even longer, wreaking havoc on your body (insomnia, chronic fatigue, dysregulated digestion, IBS, gastric ulcers, autoimmune or chronic pain disorders) because of soaring cortisol levels
• A startle reflex that goes off at the tiniest sound
• Powerful urges to self-medicate, self-harm, etc.
• Heart rate soaring, heart palpitations, chest pain, difficulty breathing, symptoms like a panic attack
• Muscle cramps and spasms from tension
• Pain. Like, extreme pain, especially if your trauma involved physical injury. Your body is repeating what happened in full detail, including whatever your nerve endings picked up, so you can feel like you're being shot, stabbed, tortured, raped, or anything else, over and over and over
• Other phantom sensations, feeling pressure or touch or blows as if they're really happening
• Non-epileptic seizures that feel like hell but can last as long as they damn well please without killing you
• Unexplained headaches, stomachaches, vomiting, tingling, numbness, sexual arousal, etc.
• Dissociation, feeling detached from your body, zoning out, a feeling of flying/floating/rollercoastering, feeling unreal, not recognizing your body, visual and spatial distortions, viewing yourself from above or behind or from a distance instead of vision originating in your eyeballs like normal
• Stiffness, paralysis. Not being able to move, losing the ability to speak, maybe even the ability to breathe
• Dizziness, loss of depth perception, fainting
• Sudden, irresistible drowsiness
• Becoming childlike or confused, temporarily losing track of your identity or memory
• Sensory hallucinations, anything from visual to taste
• Nightmares, not just of the event but of endless bizarre and awful things that make you feel the same way the event did
There's more, and I'm sure every person has a unique combination of symptoms, but that's a start.
Use this stuff in your fanfiction. Post-traumatic stress needs realistic representation!
All amazing points and so important to take in. I think I have done a couple of these, but not habitually or intensely. But it's good awareness for me.

Being overstimulated is such a weird thing to explain to people. Like "hey sorry, I'm not mad at you and this is nobody's fault and I'm not blaming anyone for it happening, I am aware this is a part of regular everyday life but I am mentally crumbling because There Have Been Things Happening nonstop for 5 hours straight back to back with no breaks, and I really need to sit down in complete silence for like 15-25 minutes, after which I will be completely fine and can proceed as normal. But if I'm not allowed to have that, I will resort to violence."
Fun fact: people who care about you find it charming if you just...say this. You don’t need to explain anything, just say that you need to go sit by yourself in silence for a bit like you’re telling them you need to go to the bathroom.
...Actually, if you say anything casually with an air of “this is not a weird thing for me to say/do/ask for”, even relative strangers will roll with it because they don’t want to be the one who Makes It Weird. I once asked someone to take over note-taking duties for me because “I need to go run up and down the hall real quick”. Nobody even asked follow-up questions when I got back.
“Be careful who you make memories with. Those things can last a lifetime.”
