1. Have proof they're a teenager first. More than just a picture, have a video call with them.

2. If you want to meet up with them, have your parents or a trusted adult come with you. Even if they are a proven teenager, its still good to have supervision in case any issues happen.

3. If you are talking to an adult, and they start being sexual in any way, you run the fuck away. It doesn't matter if they're 40 or 20. An adult inherently has a power dynamic that teenagers do not. And its up to the adult to act responsible about it. There's exceptions of course, if you're 16 and dating an 18 year old, that's not a problem, we're not talking about that.

4. Being in a server with adults or ran by adults is not inherently bad. Talking to adults is not inherently a problem, and will likely happen in any number of Discord servers. It is only an issue when they are acting sexual and show predatory behavior.

5. Look out for grooming behavior. It can be difficult, because at first it seems like innocuous behavior, like complimenting or giving gifts. Especially if you feel lonely and have low self esteem. And groomers actively target people like that.

If they start trying to isolate you, talk sexual with you, state they depend on you for emotional needs, blame you for their own actions, try to be secretive about the relationship- Then you need to talk to people you trust, block the perpetrator, and call the police on them.

They will find the things that make you happy and use it as bait. They will take advantage of your mental health struggles and use it to guilt you into being with them.

Adults are not inherently evil- actually, it’s important for teenagers to have adults that they trust, and if they can’t find that in real life then its okay if it’s only through the internet. Our job is to protect the younger generations. Many adults will do their best to help you figure out who and what you want to be.

But please, please look for the signs. They’ll be small, innocuous. Predators are good at finding openings to strike

Another thing- being groomed is never your fault. EVER. It is the adult’s responsibility to keep the relationship innocent, and it is never your fault if they ignore it.

Even if you flirt back.

Even if you start the flirting.

Even if you send inappropriate pictures.

Even if you “stopped them from committing suicide”.

Even if you like the pictures they send you.

Even if you relied on them.

Even if they were your friend.

Even if you didn’t know what was happening until it is too late.

It is never your fault, and you should never feel guilty for it. Groomers know exactly how to prey on you and make you feel bad enough to never speak out. You are not responsible for them.

Please, please be careful out there guys. If a situation feels weird or you get bad vibes, it’s okay to back out. It’s okay to be rude.

And if you have been groomed before, or if you’re currently being groomed-

It’s not your fault. You are not the perpetrator. It might take some time for you to realize, to understand, but when you do, don’t hate yourself. Dont think you were just as bad for reciprocating. Dont blame yourself for anything you said or did. It is not your fault. It is never your fault. It is our responsibility as adults to protect and support our younger counterparts, and I am so, so sorry that someone broke that and took advantage of your trust. It’s going to be okay. You did nothing wrong. It’s okay to reach out to someone if you need help. You don’t have to do it alone.

So, I learned about the allegations regarding AvidMc and Marma1ade. I’m disgusted, I feel betrayed, and most of all I feel awful for the creators who have had to interact with two toxic and manipulative individuals.

First and foremost, we need to acknowledge the victims, and give them space to tell their stories if they so choose. I will be waiting at least a month before I post anything regarding Avid and Marm’s characters again, or longer if that is needed.

After that, I’ve chosen to still post headcanons, fanart, and maybe even write fanfiction about their characters, as I believe in separating art from the artist in most cases. I believe it’s possible. However, I do not support either content creator. I will not be watching any of their videos, and have already unfollowed and unsubscribed from them.

One important aspect of interacting with one another as we go forward is respecting each others choice to seperate art from artist, or move away from the work entirely. As long as you do not support these creators directly, liking their characters is not indicative of your or someone else’s moral standing. I would like for us to respect each decisions, and to not spread hate if we disagree. Also, if someone expresses support for one of these creators, i think we should gently inform them in case they are new and unaware of the recent allegations. Not everyone is at the right place at the right time to find these things out. We have built a wonderful community, and i think many of us would hate for it to be ripped apart by interpersonal discourse.

All of my posts from now on regarding either creator’s characters will include the tag “Anti Avid” or “Anti Marm”. Unless I forget because it’s a new habit and I’m a fairly forgetful individual sometimes.

To everyone who has been hurt by Avid and Marmalade, my heart goes out to you.

To the victims, I’m sorry about what you have had to go through. We’re here to listen if you wish to talk.

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
