â SS22 Catwalk looks â
Our last 4 illustrators from the past illustrator study! We had to do a two page spread for each, and design our chosen catwalk looks from Milan, Paris, New York and London in these styles. The first one I attempted was London, the style of an old Victorian artist who uses nothing but thin pen lines to create his desired results. This one was fun! But the background took far too much time.
Paris! My favourite out of my works, background based off parisâs catacombs and one of my favourite catwalk looks. The pencil drawing took place over 3 days, and my hand is still recovering from the strain. Not fun. But still my favourite piece! Not lined, to fit the illustratorâs style.
Milan, and my first attempt at stained glass. Painful. I struggled with the illustratorâs style, and used a mix of mediaâs to try create it. Frustrating, but a learning experience! Also quite rushed, which I want to avoid in the future. This was towards the last few days, when I was focusing marketing above illustration.
New York! To look like a store front for the background, this one was quite fast to complete! Though I feel I completely missed the mark on replicating RenĂŠâs style in the actual art piece. So much detail to simplify, I ended up rushing to a degree, and ultimately quite disappointed when I think of how it could of been improved.
Over all I enjoyed these pieces, and loved this unit. Wouldnât trade in this course for anything, and would love a career in fashion.
â Collage â
Collage was hell, is hell- itâs so fiddly!! We had to grid and replicate an illustration on a larger scale with collage, and this was like torture. Losing small pieces, things not quite fitting- but it was an interesting experience none the less. It forces you to be more creative, see patterns in images to work into the piece, but if I can help it Iâd prefer to avoid college. So painful đ
â Met Gala Piece â
Given a selection from past met gala dresses and a verity of artists, we were tasked with replicating the celebrity and dress in the chosen illustratorâs style! I chose Ariana Grandeâs as I adored her outfit. Her dress was inspired by Michelangeloâs works from the renaissance era. The style I picked was rough, sketchy and used markers for rough splashes of Colour, and I hope it did it justice. God, this was difficult though- but a favourite from what Iâve done!
â Alien Heads â
Given a head out with 3 heads facing different ways, we were tasked to draw them on a larger scale. This took a lot of work, and overall was a struggle but came out quite well, all aside. For digital, we were also tasked on replicating them online and colouring them.
I could live without touching these again, but overall the experience was good! But god, it also sucked ahaha.

â Illustrator Research Piece â
We were asked to search up and gather some images for a minimum of 5 fashion illustrators from throughout the years. We were then asked to pick one, and replicate some of their chosen work (minimum of 5 artworks) and recreate them with different mediaâs. My chosen illustrator was Miyuki Morimoto, and the pieces in order from left to right were done in Ink bleed, Pencil, watercolour, Ink and finally Half & Half. I really enjoyed this project! And I adore Miyukiâs style.
â Media Experimentation â
For media experimentation, different mediaâs were placed around on separate tables. Being given handouts of what to do in what mediaâs, we had to do two of each- one the first time, and a hopefully improved one the second- Bonus one mixed media!
Watercolour, my first came out far better but faces have never been my strong point when it comes to larger scale, non-stylised. Especially with watercolour.
Pastel! God, I hate this media with a passion. Nothing works well, it gets everywhere and blending it is so difficult, I wanted to scream- I havenât even had time to sort any hair spray to set them. Absolute pain.
Pencil isnât too bad, but gives me bad cramps in my hands that can last for days. These were much more relaxing than some others, but also much more time consuming. I do like how they came out though! The first one I slipped up when lining, thus the dark neck.
Ink was very enjoyable, it flowed well and came out better than I expected, especially for a first attempt with the media.
Mixed media was fun! I picked Pro Markers, and while the bleed was frustrating in places, it overall came out well. I couldnât figure out blending, but hope it still came across well enough without.
â Stylised face 1 & 2Â â
Given a selection of (assumably) famous people and a selection of artists, we were to pick two of each and draw them in the artistâs respective style. This assignment, I despised. I used watercolour and ink bleed for the first, which came out somewhat decent in style, though the second was the toughest and I really donât like how it came out. I ended up rushing it, and it just became a mess of colour- I didnât have enough skin tone markers to make up the design, and blue was just poor choice on my behalf.
â Face Proportions â
Face proportions! We were given a handout with lips, noses, eyes and a face, expected to double it up with griding and replicated by hand. I had already glued it to the page by the time I lined it, so with my wonky precision it ended up a little all over the place. Also attempted new types of decor for the pages! This was a little frustrating as it didnât want to come out well, and if given another chance I may of redone it- but too late now. :)
â Half & Half â
Given small scale illustrations, we were asked to cut them down the centre and replicate the harder half on graph paper, stick them together and present them. This was one the more challenging things weâve done, and tested my patience quite a bit, though have come out decently.

â Sandra Rhodes â
Sandra Rhodes Study(?) of one of her pieces! We were meant to do it purely with pen bleed, though I misunderstood and made it in water colour before later going back over with the desired media in the hair. Much like most of the unit, I really enjoyed making this! We sketched them out on a larger scale, and worked up from there. While getting precision was difficult, I did really enjoy the process and overall the media. :)
â Doubled-up Stylised â
I believe our first assigned homework throughout the unit! Given up to 3 figures, we replicated them on a larger scale. I only managed one, and it was enjoyable to do, Iâve really started to enjoy drawing figures from reference and adore the long limbed style. Hope the decoration wasnât overboard! Fleshed it out with some skin tone and blush around joints like itâs a doll, the plants are fun to decorate with too.
Overall it wasnât too hard, yet still held a decent challenge for the proportions- i tend to be so wonky with limbs. While I havenât had much practice of my own independent style, I canât wait to develop one for future illustrations. These have really helped with my anatomy!!
â Colour Theory â
Sized up and done in pencil, we covered colour theory! The three main we covered was Monochromatic, where you use different shades of the same colour; Complimentary, opposing colours in the wheel that, as the name implies, complements the others well, and finally Analogous! Using colours next to each other on the wheel for the desired match.
I got to experiment a little with style in the faces (before being asked to tone it down whoops-) and overall while pencil kills my hands, it was another thing I enjoyed making. It took time though, as pencil tends toâŚ
We also did a digital version through illustrator! I really struggled with this, as the computer doesnât like me and Iâm quite bad at remembering tools and processes with Adobe software. Here is the overall result !
I didnât get to play with colours as much as I would of liked as I was strapped for time, but I feel it came out decently clean!
â S Curve â
S curve! Given a handout, we had to replicate it on a larger scale! This one was more frustrating Ngl, getting the curvy hips just didnât work out but Iâm proud of how it came out! At the end of the day, itâs a normal-ish body and somewhat presentable? Iâd like to believe if I had to redo it now at the end of unit 1, I could manage something better.
The gridding was difficult, and I mainly had to wing it which didnât help- but overall this was a fun challenge to attempt.
â 9 Head â
9 head doubled!! This one was fun, and while I probably wonât use the 9 head technique again, it is a favoured one. Designing some of these pages was frustrating, but I tried to have as much fun as I could with watercolour. :D
Apologies for the handwriting, it was around the time I gave up and decided blogging was a better path.

â Figure drawing â
A more detailed, and much larger model to double! God, this one was frustrating aha. If I had the time and patience, I would of redone it- but ignoring the wide body, short arms and, Well.. hands on general- it isnât too bad, right? :)
I messed up a bit lining a lot of these, as I havenât got the steadiest of hands.
â Basic 8head Figure + Extended Legs â
Given a basic model, we were asked to redraw it using gridding then to double the legs. It wasnât too challenging, but I have a track record of mixing up numbers- luckily after a few retries I managed to get it down.
All the practice college has given me has dramatically aided my drawing skills especially with anatomy. :)
