@2xcursekissed asked: a late evening mission leaves yuuta restlessly tossing and turning at night, the adrenaline still pumping through him as he attempts to sleep. he'd arrived at the dorms later than anticipated, and he'd hoped he would be able to knock out the minute he hit the pillow, but his hopes were crushed by reality. after what feels like an eternity rotating in his bed, flipping his pillow, watching porn, checking his phone—all that good stuff—he has had enough.
with a sigh, he decides it's time to maybe wash up again and change his scenery since his bed is not doing its job. after a quick trip to the restroom, he makes his way to the communal living space, and he's surprised to find a familiar face already sitting there, eyes glued to whatever object is in her hand.
yuuta clears his throat before speaking up to make his presence known. "hey," he says, his volume lower than usual due to the hour. "you're up late." it's an obvious statement, but he uses it to gauge his friend's mood.
deeming it safe to approach, he sinks into the sofa next to her. "i couldn't sleep either," he admits, leaning his head back to look up at the ceiling. minutes pass as he and maki stay in place there, few words shared between them as they simply sit in each other's company.
he then catches a white fuzzy object in his peripheral. he lazily turns his head, his gaze meeting the black, beady eyes of his classmate panda. "don't worry. i got you," his furry friend mouths. the devious glint in panda's eyes keeps yuuta on high alert, unsure of what to expect from the other male. his guard drops, however, when the other student disappears into the hallway. he relaxes once again into the couch beside maki, shutting his eyes.
it's only when the muffled sound of a familiar, sensual tune plays, slowly getting louder, that the atmosphere in the room changes and yuuta wishes nothing more than to die. he knows he is already on thin ice since his last attempt to flirt backfired, his 'hey' nearly causing a fight. he can't stop the heat from rising onto his cheeks when the words begin, easing into the singer's 'let's get it on' chorus.
he shoots up, tense as he turns to his friend at a comically fast speed. "it's not me, i swear," he raises his hands in surrender, hoping she knows he really is not the cause of the sudden music playing. ((for maki obvs lol))

maki is normally pretty good about ensuring she get's a full night's rest. sleeping well is an essential part of being awake enough to even take on curses, especially for someone like herself that has to rely solely on her senses, so she needs to stay on her toes. unfortunately, knowing this doesn't spare her from the occasional night of restlessness. plagued by insomnia, maki ditches her room to head on over to the communal area. there's better reception there, so she figures she might as well. maybe scrolling through videos on her phone for a while will help make her sleepy.
she's only been at it for around 10 minutes when she hears a familiar gait trekking down the hallway and into the living space. she hates to admit it, but a feature of her sharpened senses is knowing how other's footsteps sound. she normally tries not to pay them much mind as it can be a nuisance, but she's memorized his like the back of her hand. with that considered, she's not shocked when yuuta steps into the room and makes his cheesy comment about her still being up. when they first met, maki would've hit him with a 'no shit' and an upturn of her nose. they're — dare she say it — best friends now, and it's actually kind of nice to see him join her.
yuuta settles beside her, speaking a bit and her responding little as well. she leans against him, just a little, as she continues to scroll through the stupid videos and watches them with him. she can actually feel herself start dozing off a little, head leaning against yuuta's shoulder. her phone might soon slip from her hand, but yuuta made a surprisingly great cushion. it was nice, talking and laughing with him when it was just the two of them. all of their problems seemed so far away — they weren't child soldiers, but just regular teenagers watching stupid tiktoks together late at night. she wouldn't trade her life for anything but she can't help but wonder, sometimes...
all too soon, maki's roused from her partial-sleep by yuuta's sudden movement. she's dazed, only barely catching what he says as she tries to piece that and his frantic expression together. it's not him? what's not him? it's quiet then agian, only not really, because she's finally alert enough to notice the steadily increasing volume of music playing. it's a little muffled, but unmistakable. she listens out for the words and instantly feels heat rise to her cheeks. she's suddenly thankful that the lighting in the room is almost non-existent.
❝ what the hell...?! then who? we're not overhearing... that idiot didn't bring someone here, did he? ❞ maki shoots up off the couch and narrows her eyes, half ready to file a complaint to yaga about their idiotic, unprofessional sensei when she realizes the music isn't coming from the direction of the hall leading to the staff rooms, but from the 2nd years. if it's not yuuta, then...
❝ no, that's not it... hm. toge or panda, right? who am i beating the shit out of? ❞
