The argument is that militant anti-fascism is inherently self-defense because of the historically documented violence that fascists pose, especially to marginalized people...

It’s pure coincidence that America feels like it is dying this summer because nobody can breathe. It’s a powerful metaphor though, and one that bears some parsing: Cities are literally on fire and nobody can breathe, people of color are being strangled by white police officers and their last words— captured on camera—are “I can’t breathe.” A pandemic has taken over 100,000 lives and the death, the disease, and the attempt at prevention keep us from breathing fully.

From New Jersey to California, officers marched with protesters or took a knee in solidarity, in contrast to violent altercations elsewhere.
From New York to Los Angeles, police officers escalated the national unrest.

One thing that struck me as I talked to two of the protestors who were being arrested is they said I was black just like them but the only thing that was different was that I had a press badge on… which confers a certain amount of privilege. I’m a storyteller so I have to take their words and tell them, you know, tell them in an honest way, in as honest a way that I can, and that’s really where my role fits in. So while, yeah, it may not end up with me in flex cuffs, it’s still, is part of this larger picture of what’s going on right now. Who tells the story and how they tell it, and you need credible messengers and then that’s what I was hoping to be to them. Whether they saw it that way or not, I’m not sure…
