for two and a half seasons, we've seen this man go from nearly marrying a woman who was lying to him, to travelling the world, to changing his whole personality and sleeping with random women to fit in, and the one constant is trying to find 'purpose'. and then penelope happens and everything is bright and beautiful.
and then:
this breaks my heart, our hearts, and penelope's heart because his self worth comes into it and he believes he needs to protect her and if he's not doing that, what is he good for? when really truly all penelope wants is him as he is and he can't see it. not yet. like oh baby boy, it's going to be okay i promise.

Can you imagine the high Penelope must have been in when Lord Debling started courting her? Not just because she was finally getting what she wanted (besides Colin, who she had started to give up on at this point): freedom, but also because her mom was impressed and pleased. Her mom was finally โseeingโ her. Penelope was now able to make her mom proud. Something she probably thought she would never be able to do. She got more positive interactions with her mother during the courtship than she had ever had before.
For me, one of the most heartbreaking scenes is where Lord Debling breaks things off with Penelope, and her mother says โWhat have you done?โ You can see the hurt in her eyes. She was right, her mom really only cared about her when she had a manโs attention. And that broke me.
