You will fall in love with your friends. Deep, passionate love. You will create a second family with them, a kind of tribe that makes you feel less vulnerable. Sometimes our families can’t love us all the time. Sometimes we’re born into families who don’t know how to love us properly. They do as much as they can but the rest is up to our friends. They can love you all the time, without judgement. At least the good ones can.

Please don’t expect me to always be good and kind and loving. There are times when I will be cold and thoughtless and hard to understand.

That’s the thing about depression: A human being can survive almost anything, as long as she sees the end in sight. But depression is so insidious, and it compounds daily, that it’s impossible to ever see the end. The fog is like a cage without a key.

Millions of people can believe in you, and yet none of it matters if you don’t believe in yourself.

The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen.

I know you don’t realize it and I know you may have never been told this but I’m so glad you exist. You are a swirling vortex of bits and pieces of everything that makes you who you are and do you know how cool that is? You are the messy drawings you created when you were four that still lay scribbled across your wall to the lines of your favorite books. You are your love and adoration for poetry and you are your hatred for unequal rights. You have galaxies spiraling at rapid paces through your veins. You are beautiful.
