Alright so you’ve decided to embark upon your skincare journey. What’s the first step? Choosing a cleanser of course! There is a plethora of different formulas to choose from and it can get a little confusing so let me explain the different kinds of cleansers starting with the water based kinds. 

First is the most basic, a foaming cleanser.  Just as the name indicates, it is a cleanser that is water based and lathers up. It’s one of the toughest kinds of cleanser and is preferred by those who have normal to oily skin. 

Gel cleansers are similar to foaming cleansers in that they are water-based and lather up. The major difference lies in their ingredients, gel cleansers tend to be formulated with plant extracts and milder ingredients. They also lather less than foaming cleansers and are gentler on the skin. Gel cleansers are also touted for their deep cleansing benefits as they are able to dissolve oil as well as sweat. 

Next, you can also choose to use an oil-based cleanser before your water-based cleanser if you wear makeup or just want that extra cleansing. 

Cleansing balms are a stiffer formula that is moisturizing and can dissolve makeup and sebum. This formula is mostly for dry to normal oil level skin. 

Cleansing oils, as counterintuitive as it sounds, are for oily skin. The oil can dissolve and break down makeup and sebum very well and then get dissolved by water. It’s used by massaging it into the skin then emulsifying it with a small amount of water, then dissolving and rinsing it away.
