The further I read into the TPHHP novel, the more Lee Hoyeol and Grandfell's personalities are seeming to... become cognizant of the other. There's even a line about Grandfell disapproving of Lee Hoyeol's aesthetics, and approving of someone elses instead. Literally confirmation that Grandfell is aware and awake, forming opinions not just of other people, but of Lee Hoyeol himself.
In the manhwa, Grandfell seems to be very obviously "commenting" on what Lee Hoyeol thinks or says, but this is far more toned down in the novel. As they "separate" in the novel, the more it starts to feel like Grandfell is no longer a baseline for how Lee Hoyeol is being forced to act, but an identity capable of recognizing himself and Lee Hoyeol as two separate people in control of the same body.
It was surprising to me at first that the novel didn't make it feel like there were two people in one body, but as I read into the ch 200s I'm starting to recognize the same feeling that the manhwa gives off.
Likely this feeling is not because Grandfell was dormant or unaware at any point, but our narrator Lee Hoyeol had no reason to assume that Grandfell was awake. Now that they have cohabitated in the same body for so long, Lee Hoyeol is recognizing Grandfell's feelings as someone reacting to the environment. Rather than Grandfell's past and pre set personality reacting to the things around him– which is how it originally would be if he were an ordinary player, since Grandfell would have merged with Lee Hoyeol– Grandfell is reacting entirely independently.
This is long winded but I'm enjoying the slow progress! I await the day that these two can finally hold an actual conversation!!
