Some students are finding the structure of semester-based online courses more appealing than self-paced (all on your own). On the next page do a find for ‘semester’ to highlight your choices. No enrollment limit on these either.

Here’s a search for an Upper-Level Non-Journalism Area 4 online self-paced course. That’s a mouthful!
“How do I find upper-level non-journalism courses?” Easily the most asked question in our office. This search is for Women’s and Gender Studies, traditional course (not online), 3 credits.
Looking for a 1 or 2 credit upper-level non-journalism course? Area 4 requires 14 credits, sometimes a couple of 1 credit courses or a 2 credit course is in order.
Narrowing a MyZou search for non-journalism electives. This is for a student looking for a Sociology course (Area 1, btw) that meets sometime between 9:30 and 1 on Tues and Thurs.

Advice From the Industry
We had the pleasure of attending a session from an accomplished journalist last week. He extolled advice for students who want to be successful in the industry. It should be noted that the speaker introduced the talk with three things to consider. I counted several. Here they are:
1. Be emotionally intelligent.
2. Think critically. This requires cultural literacy, awareness of current events, knowledge of comparative history, viewing situations from many angles, backing up your story with data and having your own ideas.
3. Ethics. One of the first ‘nouns’ that the speaker said should be a ‘verb’. You have to constantly use an ethical lens.
4. Enterprise. Synthesize an original thought. Take the common and make it appear different. Developing your sources is a key component here.
5.Storytelling. Develop characters. Use language, video and sound.
6. Know more than the craft of journalism. Choose upper level non-journalism requirements carefully. Ok, time for a disclosure. This is how I perceive the speaker’s message of “you have to be ready for anything.” The time to develop a story is short and to do so in a compelling way you need to have a broad knowledge base. Consider Anthropology, History, Political Science, Economics, Black Studies, Sociology and Gender Studies, to name a few.
7. Diversity. Another noun-turned-verb. Practice it always. Picture a bridge, build across to create reasoned reflection, don’t blow it up.
8. And, finally, you cannot look at this work as homework.
Please forgive my non-AP ways. I’m a higher education professional.
