I am providing a report with an answer to the question why I consider Hugo from vat7k to be an asshole.
Below are the proofs based on the author's headcannons, which in turn were formed under the influence of some canonical facts.
1. This guy has no moral compass. His world is divided into what he likes, what he doesn't like, and what he doesn't care about. the only person who has power over him, his opinion and actions is Donnella, who is also not a good example of a parental figure, adjusting his view of the world to the angle she needs.
2. Hugo does not consider it necessary to waste time on something that will not be useful, so treats all problems like a real runner - he runs away from difficulties, escapes from feelings, words, emotions, from something incomprehensible. this view was instilled in him by a lifestyle in which, first of all, one must take care of food and at least a little comfort, rather than any moral dilemmas.
3. he does not attach importance to either his own life or anyone else's, leaning towards the opinion that every person is replaceable, and the value in his existence is measured in, God willing, one silver coin. therefore, Hugo subconsciously forbids himself to get attached to anything, knowing that he will have to give it up eventually.
4. he is a man who was forced as a child to reject ambitions and dreams, cruelly plunging into the dirty reality of an unenviable existence, even for smart kids like him. therefore, he is not inclined to think about the future, God willing, caring about tomorrow.
5. faith in something unrealizable or ephemeral is alien to him, whether it is the hope of future happiness or some God whose worship will give him what he wants. He is a realist to the core, because if he allows himself to indulge in impossible dreams, he will die.
6. He clings to life only because he feels obligated to Donnella, and doesn't want to disappoint her with his own failure.
7. he is used to lying about literally everything - name, age, place of origin, gender. the truth is difficult for him, just out of habit about its eternal concealment.
β But his advantage is that he is able to change. it will take him a lot of time and willpower.
