CHAPTER 9
back | next
Leah kept looking at Rhea with the same curiosity a four-year-old girl would show toward an unexpected visitor.
– And who’s she, Mommy?
Y/N smiled tenderly as she tucked a strand of hair behind her daughter’s ear.
– I told you she’s a friend from a long time ago
Leah tilted her head just a little.
– From when you were little?
Y/N let out a little laugh.
– More or less
Rhea smiled for the first time since she’d arrived.
– Yeah, I remember your mom was really good at drawing when she was a teenager
Leah’s eyes sparkled.
– She still draws!
She broke free from Y/N’s arms and ran off toward the living room.
She returned just a few seconds later with a huge folder full of papers.
– Look!
She opened it on the coffee table.
There were dozens of drawings.
Landscapes.
Animals.
Princesses.
And lots of portraits.
Rhea began to flip through them slowly.
– Did your mom draw all of these?
Leah puffed out her chest with pride.
– Yes!
She pointed to one in particular.
Two figures holding hands under a huge and very colorful tree.
One had light brown hair.
The other, dark.
– That’s my mom and me. I made the tree
Rhea felt a little lump in her throat.
The drawing was simple.
But it was full of details.
The two of them smiling.
A huge sun.
A heart floating above them.
Y/N looked at the drawing with a tired smile.
– It's her favorite– Leah hugged the folder. – It´s only me and her
The phrase hit Rhea with unexpected force.
She looked at Y/N. She was still smiling.
But there was something sad in her eyes.
Something that wasn't there when they were teenagers.
– Leah. Could you go with Mrs. Min for a little while?
The little girl pouted.
– Why?
– Because the grown-ups have to talk about boring things –Leah sighed dramatically.
– They always talk about boring things…
The two of them laughed. After kissing her mother on the cheek, she walked down the hallway with her stuffed rabbit dragging it across the floor.
When Leah disappeared from her sight…
Silence returned.
A very different one than before. Rhea left the folder on the table.
– She’s beautiful.
Y/N smiled. This time with pride.
– She is.
– She looks a lot like you.
Y/N looked away.
– That’s what they say. But we both know it’s not true
Rhea took a deep breath. The moment had come.
– Y/N…
She slowly looked up.
– I’m not here to judge you. I’m not here to ask you for an explanation. I just… I need to understand what happened.
Y/N remained completely immobile.
– Why didn’t you ever tell her?
The question was suspended between them. Y/N took several seconds to answer.
When she finally spoke, her voice was barely a whisper. – Because I knew her.
Rhea frowned slightly.
– I knew exactly what her reaction was going to be. I remembered that night perfectly. The tears. The promises. And that phrase that Lara repeated more than once. "I never want to have children." – Y/N lowered her gaze to her own hands. – She didn’t say it maliciously. Never. Just… It was her dream. Debuting. Traveling. Seeing the world. She always talked about it
She smiled with nostalgia.
– She said that she couldn’t imagine a life where she had to choose between a stage and a family
Rhea remained silent.
– And when I discovered that I was pregnant… – The words began to come out with difficulty. – the first person I thought of was her – Yn´s eyes became wet.– Everyone was starting to know her name. Her career was just taking off.
Rhea watched her uninterruptedly. – If I showed up saying I was pregnant… – She slowly shrugged her head. –They were going to destroy her. They were going to point at her. To say that she had been irresponsible. That she had ruined her future. – Yn took a deep breath. – And I couldn’t do that to her. Even if we were never to meet again
– Even if it meant raising Leah alone? – Rhea asked softly.
Y/N smiled with sadness. – I never raised her alone
She looked at the hallway where the little one had disappeared.
– I raised her with a lot of love. With the help of Mrs. Min. Julia. Of my parents when they could come. She never lacked affection. The only thing she missed because of me… – her voice ended up breaking. – was the opportunity to meet the other person who also might have loved her from day one
Rhea felt a knot in her throat. For two weeks she had heard Lara repeat over and over that Y/N had hidden something unforgivable from her. But sitting in front of Yn...
She didn’t see a manipulative woman.
She saw an exhausted mother.
A mother who had made an impossible decision believing that she was protecting everyone.
And for the first time, Rhea understood that story had never had a villain. Just two seventeen-year-old girls who made decisions that were too big for someone their age… and a girl who ended up growing up with the consequences of both.
