Henry Ossawa Tanner was born on this day in 1859. As a child Tanner was recognized as a prodigy and he became the first African American to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, studying under the legendary Thomas Eakins. Known for his realistic style and diverse body of work, Tanner received international acclaim for his artistry.
