Bangalter said that the two became robots as they were working in their studio on the morning of September 9, 1999, at precisely 9:09 a.m. He explained that he and de Homem-Christo were working on their sampler when it exploded. When they regained consciousness, they discovered that they’d become machines. Regardless of the credibility of that tall tale, Bangalter’s story was a fun way to defuse pre-millennial angst and poke fun at DJ culture in general. No one expected the costumes to last. But they did, and at this point, the helmets are as iconic as the KISS makeup or Iggy Pop’s leather jacket. By now, the two are almost like method actors (or method DJs); they are rarely photographed without their masks. Many of their fans don’t know what they look like. “The mask gets very hot, “Bangalter admits.”But after wearing it for as long as I have, I am used to it.”

Stryker: Have you met Brian Wilson before? Thomas?

Guy-Man: Actually, I don’t think Thomas met him?

Thomas: [stuttering] I ran into him at Henson Studios when they were recording We Are the World 25 Anniversary for the Haiti hurricane…

Guy-Man: No, I know several versions. I love this song.

Thomas: It was Guy-Man who made me listen to it. He asked, ‘Do you know the chick song?' I prefer the Italian version. The voice comes from the chest, it seems to be thicker.

1st Interviewer: So Guy-Manuel, you know all the versions?

Guy-Man: I know a couple of them. This is the kind of refrain I love. Like the ‘I’m Blue' song. 'I’m blue, dagoudi dadouda’, or Pinocchio and other small Italian songs. There was also the song From Romania, what was it called?

Thomas: Ozone?

Guy-Man: Yeah, Ozone!

1st Interviewer: From Moldavia.

Guy-Man: I’m very fond of that kind of thing.

Thomas: It has been covered by Rihanna.

Guy-Man: Yeah, she did a huge hit with it.
